A closer look at South African manufacturing, by the numbers.

Manufacturing still contributes around 13% of South Africa's GDP and employs more than 1.6 million people. Within that, basic iron & steel, non-ferrous metals, metal products, and machinery make up close to 21% of total manufacturing sales, one of the sector's four largest clusters, while automotive alone produces more than 500,000 vehicles a year.

The near-term picture is mixed but not without growth. Absa's Manufacturing PMI sat at 46.8 in July, still below the 50-point growth line, but business activity and domestic demand have now improved for two months running. Within that, electrical machinery, textiles & clothing, and petroleum/chemical/rubber/plastics all posted year-on-year gains even while the sector average dipped.

In this environment, machine efficiency and uptime matter more than ever.

This user report comes straight from HERMLE's own case studies. It’s not a TOP-TOOL customer, but gives us a great look at what their automation technology can do in the real world.

German subcontractor HEIM (Stahlbau-Metalltechnik Johann Heim GmbH) has been in business since 1776. That’s seven generations of combining craftsmanship with metal. When a 2022 order for 2,000 technically demanding robot parts pushed their manual processes to the limit, they turned to a HERMLE 5-axis machining centre (C 32 U) paired with the RS1 robot automation system.

The results speak for themselves. Their production sometimes runs for two full weeks without stopping across materials from brass and copper to stainless and cast steel.
