Solar Scares or Solar Savings? Let’s Clear the Air. ☀️🇿🇦
If you’ve been following the news about the March 2026 Eskom Solar Deadline, you might be feeling more "shocked" than "powered up." Between threats of R6,000 fines and "forced" registrations, many South Africans are putting their solar dreams on hold.
At Ampforge, we believe in power—not panic. Here is the truth behind the "Eskom Scandal" to help you decide if it’s time to flip the switch:
1. Is registration mandatory?
Technically, yes. NERSA and Eskom require all grid-tied systems (even those that don’t feed back) to be registered. However, energy experts and groups like OUTA point out that if your system is safe (behind the meter) and doesn't export power, Eskom currently has very little legal authority to "fine" you.
2. What is the March 2026 Deadline?
This is actually a concession window. Until 31 March 2026, Eskom is:
Waiving the R10,000 registration and connection fees.
Providing a free smart meter (for systems under 50kVA).
Simplifying the rules—you no longer need an expensive professional engineer; a registered electrician’s sign-off is enough!
3. Will I be fined R6,000?
Eskom recently clarified that they are not currently fining direct customers for unregistered systems. The "fines" are largely a tactic to encourage people to join the official database. If your system is safe and has a valid CoC (Certificate of Compliance), you are already meeting the primary legal safety requirements.
4. Why are they doing this?
It’s mostly about revenue and data. Eskom wants to know how much solar is on the grid to manage stability and move users to "Homeflex" tariffs.
The Ampforge Promise: We Handle the Red Tape 🛡️
Don't let bureaucracy stop you from beating load shedding and rising costs. When you choose Ampforge, we don't just bolt panels to your roof:
