Thread milling application on a 2-axis lathe with C-axis capability 🏭

Thread milling is a CNC machining process that uses a rotating cutter to create threads via helical interpolation. Unlike traditional tapping where the tool matches the hole size, a thread mill is smaller than the hole and traces a circular and Z-axis path to carve out the thread profile.

Why Choose Thread Milling?
1️⃣ Tool Flexibility: One thread mill can cut various diameters and both left-hand and right-hand threads as long as the pitch is identical.
2️⃣ Better Fit Control: Machinists can easily adjust the pitch diameter offset in the CNC program to achieve a perfect, snug thread fit (e.g., class 2B or 3B).
3️⃣ Safe Blind Holes: It allows you to thread perfectly to the very bottom of a blind hole.
4️⃣ Safety & Recovery: If a thread mill breaks, it is easily removed without scrapping the workpiece, unlike a broken tap.

🚛Testing phase on the Parabolic Rolling Machine that forms leaf blades.

This machine had been standing idle for 4 years, several teams tried to get it going again with no success. They then called MSI and we’re proud to say we brought it back to life 💪.

Retrofit on a purpose built chamfer machine 🏭 Customised user screen for easy operator use. Operators doesn’t have to change the g-code, a few parameters on a user friendly screen enables the operator to change job sizes without messing with the g-code programming - eliminating user faults and unnecessary expenses 🧑‍💻.

A Sinumerik 808D advanced system with X + Z servo motors and squirrel cage spindle motors was used on this project.
