The base oil is only half the story.

Every high-performance lubricant contains an additive package, a carefully engineered blend of chemical compounds that give the oil its real-world performance characteristics. Here's what a well-formulated additive package does:

Anti-wear additives
Thermal stabilisers
Oxidation inhibitors
Corrosion inhibitors
Detergents & dispersants

A cheaper lubricant may have the right viscosity grade but a depleted or mismatched additive package, and that's where the damage starts.

Different lubricant manufacturers use different base oil qualities and additive packages. Even two products that share the same viscosity grade (say, two 15W-40 engine oils) may contain additive chemistries that are incompatible when combined.

Mixing can result in:

✖ Additive interaction: Incompatible chemistry can reduce the effectiveness of both oils
✖ Viscosity instability: The blend may not perform as either individual product was designed to
✖ Deposit formation: Reactions between additive packages can lead to sludge or sediment
✖ Voided OEM warranty in some cases

In an emergency: Topping up with a different brand or grade isn't catastrophic. But it should be followed by a full drain and refill with the correct specified product at the earliest opportunity.

The safest approach is always to use a consistent, correctly specified lubricant throughout your service interval.

Most operators change oil based on distance alone. But in demanding operating environments, the condition of your oil matters far more than the odometer reading.

These are the signs your oil needs to change, regardless of mileage:

✖ Oil is very dark and opaque: Oxidation and contamination

✖ Gritty texture or metallic particles present: Component wear
✖ Burning smell: Thermal breakdown of the oil

Running hot? Your lubricant might be part of the problem.

High engine temperatures are a red flag and in African operating conditions, where ambient heat is already a significant factor, the thermal stress placed on your oil is substantial.

What happens when your oil can't handle the heat:

That brief window accounts for a disproportionate amount of total wear over your engine's life. The solution:

Using the wrong specification in the wrong gearbox can cause irreversible damage.

The higher EP additive load in GL5 that makes it exceptional for hypoid axle applications is the same chemistry that can degrade brass and bronze synchromesh components over time.

Always check your OEM specification before selecting a gear oil. If your vehicle or machine calls for GL4, using GL5 is not an upgrade. It's a risk.

Your lubricant's viscosity grade isn't just a number, it's the difference between protection and premature wear.

Viscosity describes how an oil flows at different temperatures, and every grade is a precise specification, not a suggestion. What the numbers mean:

The "W" (Winter) number: Measures cold-start flow. The lower the number, the faster the oil reaches critical components at startup.

The second number: Measures viscosity at full operating temperature. A higher number means a thicker, more stable film under heat and load.

A 15W-40, for example, is formulated to flow readily in cold conditions to protect components from the moment the engine turns over, then hold a stable film as temperatures climb.

In African operating environments, where ambient heat is already elevated and cold mornings are still a factor, viscosity selection directly affects wear rates, fuel efficiency and component life.

Too thin? The film breaks down under load. Too thick? Cold-start protection is compromised.
