The base oil is only half the story.

Every high-performance lubricant contains an additive package, a carefully engineered blend of chemical compounds that give the oil its real-world performance characteristics. Here's what a well-formulated additive package does:

Anti-wear additives
Thermal stabilisers
Oxidation inhibitors
Corrosion inhibitors
Detergents & dispersants

A cheaper lubricant may have the right viscosity grade but a depleted or mismatched additive package, and that's where the damage starts.

At Engol, every product is formulated with the additive profile matched to the application. Not generic. Not compromise.

Different lubricant manufacturers use different base oil qualities and additive packages. Even two products that share the same viscosity grade (say, two 15W-40 engine oils) may contain additive chemistries that are incompatible when combined.

Mixing can result in:

✖ Additive interaction: Incompatible chemistry can reduce the effectiveness of both oils
✖ Viscosity instability: The blend may not perform as either individual product was designed to
✖ Deposit formation: Reactions between additive packages can lead to sludge or sediment
✖ Voided OEM warranty in some cases

In an emergency: Topping up with a different brand or grade isn't catastrophic. But it should be followed by a full drain and refill with the correct specified product at the earliest opportunity.

The safest approach is always to use a consistent, correctly specified lubricant throughout your service interval.

Most operators change oil based on distance alone. But in demanding operating environments, the condition of your oil matters far more than the odometer reading.

These are the signs your oil needs to change, regardless of mileage:

✖ Oil is very dark and opaque: Oxidation and contamination
✖ Milky or foamy appearance: Water ingress
✖ Gritty texture or metallic particles present: Component wear
✖ Burning smell: Thermal breakdown of the oil
✖ Engine running hotter than normal
✖ Increased oil consumption between intervals
✖ Operating in extreme dust, heat or load conditions that accelerate degradation

In mining, agriculture, and heavy transport applications, standard consumer-grade drain intervals are rarely appropriate. Equipment operates harder, in harsher conditions, for longer hours.

📩 Engol can advise on appropriate service intervals based on your equipment type and operating environment. Get in touch with our team!

Running hot? Your lubricant might be part of the problem.

High engine temperatures are a red flag and in African operating conditions, where ambient heat is already a significant factor, the thermal stress placed on your oil is substantial.

What happens when your oil can't handle the heat:

✖ Viscosity breaks down. The oil thins, film strength drops.
✖ Oxidation accelerates. The oil degrades faster and forms deposits.
✖ Additive packages deplete prematurely.
✖ Protective film between components fails under load.

The result? Increased wear, reduced performance, and a much shorter oil life than the drain interval suggests.

Our engine oils are formulated with high-temperature stability in mind. Engineered to maintain viscosity and film integrity under the sustained heat loads common to mining, transport and agricultural applications across Africa.

If your equipment runs hot, your lubricant needs to be built for it.

Automatic transmission fluid isn't universal, and using the wrong type can cause serious, costly damage.

Different automatic transmissions are engineered to operate with specific fluid formulations. The clutch pack friction characteristics, shift feel, and internal seals are all designed around a particular ATF specification.

Using an incompatible ATF can cause:

✖ Incorrect shift timing and feel
✖ Clutch pack slippage or glazing
✖ Seal degradation and fluid leaks
✖ Transmission overheating
✖ Premature failure

Always verify the ATF specification in your owner's manual or service documentation. Not just the type on the shelf.

📩 Engol supplies ATF products formulated to meet the specifications your transmission was built for.

Before your oil fully circulates, engine components run with minimal lubrication. Bearings, cylinder walls, camshafts, all moving under load, with no protective film between them.

That brief window accounts for a disproportionate amount of total wear over your engine's life. The solution:

A lubricant with the right cold-flow viscosity and a strong anti-wear additive package, so protection kicks in from the first second, not the thirtieth.

Engol engine oils are formulated to flow rapidly at cold start and deliver immediate anti-wear coverage, reducing that critical startup exposure window.

Using the wrong specification in the wrong gearbox can cause irreversible damage.

The higher EP additive load in GL5 that makes it exceptional for hypoid axle applications is the same chemistry that can degrade brass and bronze synchromesh components over time.

Always check your OEM specification before selecting a gear oil. If your vehicle or machine calls for GL4, using GL5 is not an upgrade. It's a risk.

📩 Engol supplies both GL4 and GL5 gear oils across a wide range of applications.

That whining, grinding or clunking isn't always a mechanical failure waiting to happen… sometimes, it's a lubrication problem in disguise.

The Engol solution:

Our gear oils are formulated with high-pressure additive packages specifically designed to maintain film strength under heavy load, reducing metal-to-metal contact and the wear that causes noise.

Before you book the gearbox in for a strip-down, check your lubricant first. The fix is sometimes simpler - and far less expensive - than you think.

Your lubricant's viscosity grade isn't just a number, it's the difference between protection and premature wear.

Viscosity describes how an oil flows at different temperatures, and every grade is a precise specification, not a suggestion. What the numbers mean:

The "W" (Winter) number: Measures cold-start flow. The lower the number, the faster the oil reaches critical components at startup.

The second number: Measures viscosity at full operating temperature. A higher number means a thicker, more stable film under heat and load.

A 15W-40, for example, is formulated to flow readily in cold conditions to protect components from the moment the engine turns over, then hold a stable film as temperatures climb.

In African operating environments, where ambient heat is already elevated and cold mornings are still a factor, viscosity selection directly affects wear rates, fuel efficiency and component life.

Too thin? The film breaks down under load. Too thick? Cold-start protection is compromised.

The right grade for your application isn't guesswork, it's engineering.
