South Africa’s most commonly mined minerals

South Africa has a strong mining industry; taking the spot for the fifth largest mining sector in the world in terms of GDP value. South Africa’s mining reserves are estimated to be worth approximately R20 trillion. Let us look at which minerals are bringing in the most money in South Africa.

Coal is an important resource because it fuels industrialization.
Gold is a precious metal that plays an important role in South Africa’s economy.
South Africa is the most significant diamond mining country in the world.
South Africa is the largest producer of platinum in the world, having produced an excess of 163,000 kgs in 2010.
Together with Zimbabwe, South Africa owns some 90% of the world’s chromium reserves.
South Africa is the leading producer of iron ore in Africa and the seventh-largest in the world.

According to the World Economic Forum, South Africa has the worst math and science skills in the world – but that hasn’t stopped individuals from excelling in the field, nor South African institutions from shining through.

The CWTS Leiden Ranking for 2016 shows which institutions had the best scientific performance out of over 800 major universities worldwide – with five South African universities making the cut.

The ranking is based exclusively on bibliographic data from the Web of Science database produced by Thomson Reuters, across a number of science indices, including maths, science, social science, and arts and humanities.

Over the past few years, South Africa has suffered because of the poor state of its electricity industry. The country has experienced rolling blackouts, substantial cost overruns, and long delays in delivering new power stations. Finally, new power stations are beginning to come on stream.

Concerns over power supply have diverted attention from the bigger brothers, transport fuels and base chemicals, which have similar problems. But nothing is being done to address the gaps.

Antiquated regulation of transport fuels reinforces apartheid-era policy designs in the petroleum and base chemicals industries at considerable cost to consumers and the economy. These challenges could be overcome if South Africa developed a plan to deal with them as it did for electricity.

Plant biotechnology helps farmers tackle insects, diseases, and weeds in the fields, as well as other environmental conditions such as drought. This increases the survival and yields of the crops. In the future biotech crops could offer foods with higher nutrient levels, longer shelf life and the ability to grow, even in the face of climate change. South Africa is ranked first in Africa and ninth globally as the mega-biotech country on the basis of the number of hectares of biotech crops under cultivation. The economic gains from biotech crops for South Africa is estimated to be over US$218.5 million. Only three biotech crops are currently cultivated in South Africa.
