SO WHAT IS THE FUEL BUG??
The diesel fuel bug is actually a mixture of different microbes, bacteria and fungi that can live and thrive in the interface between water and diesel in your fuel tank. like most bacteria it will reproduce very quickly to potentially become a serious problem in a short amount of time.
WHERE DOES THE FUEL BUG COME FROM??
The diesel fuel bug is most commonly introduced into your tanks from an infected source but it also lives in the air ready to be absorbed into your fuel.
IS THIS A NEW PROBLEM??
With over 1500 identified forms of diesel fuel bug, the problem has been around since diesel was first used.
However... in more recent efforts to reduce environmental damage, we have seen the introduction of Biofuels added into marine diesel.
As Biofuels are hygroscopic, they absorb moisture from the air and it is this moisture that gives the diesel fuel bug the perfect conditions to thrive.
This, together with the reduction of sulphur in marine fuels gives the bug a less caustic environment to live in.
HOW CAN I PREVENT IT??
As a first precaution you should do whatever possible to keep moisture from entering your fuel tanks. make sure your fuel cap is well sealed and ensure any pipework/hoses etc are secure.
Ensure your tank breathers are secure and in a position that they cannot be subject to water ingress
Try to keep tanks regularly topped up to reduce the chances of condensation
Install a good quality water trap/prefilter
Avoid storing fuel for any lengths of time
Purchase your fuel from a reputable supplier
The use of biocide additives as a preventative measure is good practice but please seek advice before use as they are not compatible with all fuel injection systems.
Fuel polishing systems are a highly efficient way of removing moisture but can be a very costly investment
WHAT CAN I DO IF I FIND THE BUG ALREADY IN MY FUEL SYSTEM??
The severity of contamination will determine which course of action you will need to take.
Light contamination may only require treatment with biocide and more regular fuel filter changes, whereas a heavily contaminated system would more likely need a full strip down with the fuels tanks needing cleaned out and treated.

Prevention is ALWAYS better than cure!!
