The Science of Fabric Dyeing™ – Season 1
Chapter 8 | The Complete Picture
Low Liquor Ratio is not just a number.
And it is not the result of a single feature.
It is the outcome of a complete engineering system working around one objective:
To bring the operating Liquor Ratio as close as practically possible to the physical requirement of the fabric.
Fabric physics defines the limit.
Machine engineering minimizes its own water requirement.
Process development ensures efficient use of every liter.
Measurement verifies the real operating conditions.
Control keeps the result stable in real production.
From High Available NPSH and Open Plaiter® + Liquor Bypass®, to TKLR® and Variable Loading®, every element contributes to the same target:
The lowest practical Liquor Ratio in real production.
Because real efficiency is not based on claims or theoretical values.
It is engineered.
It is measured.
It is controlled.
The fabric defines the limit.
Engineering defines how close you can get.

The Science of Fabric Dyeing™ – Season 1Chapter 7 | Variable Loading®

A dyeing machine is not always operated at 100% capacity.

Real production means different batch sizes — and this is where Liquor Ratio often starts to increase.

With conventional machine design, reducing the fabric load does not necessarily reduce the hydraulic volume of the machine. The result is simple:

Less fabric → higher Liquor Ratio.

With SCLAVOS Variable Loading®, the machine water requirement adapts to the actual batch load.

This allows the machine to operate from 100% down to 60% loading while maintaining the same operating Liquor Ratio.

The result:

• Greater production flexibility• Smaller batch capability• Consistent dyeing conditions• Lower water and energy demand• No Liquor Ratio penalty at partial loading

Because a truly efficient dyeing machine should not perform efficiently only at nominal capacity.

Less fabric. Same Liquor Ratio.Smart Performance. Real Production.

Chapter 6 | TKLR® – Know Your Real Liquor Ratio
Anyone can claim a low Liquor Ratio.
But can you verify it?
In real production, Liquor Ratio should not be based on assumptions, predefined fabric water-retention values or theoretical calculations.
It should be measured.
With TKLR®, SCLAVOS continuously determines the actual operating Liquor Ratio by combining real water measurement through an electromagnetic flowmeter with live machine-level verification.
Every batch. Every recipe. Throughout the process.
The result is not an estimated Liquor Ratio, but a measured and continuously verified process parameter, with ±3% accuracy from batch to batch.
Because achieving a low Liquor Ratio is only part of the equation.
Knowing your real Liquor Ratio — and being able to verify it — is what gives you true process control.
TKLR® doesn’t estimate Liquor Ratio.
It measures it.

The Science of Fabric Dyeing™ – Season 1Chapter 5 | Open Plaiter® + Liquor Bypass®

How can a dyeing machine achieve a low Liquor Ratio while maintaining the hydraulic conditions required for stable circulation?

The answer lies in separating the water required by the circulation system from the liquor carried and retained by the fabric inside the J-box.

With Open Plaiter® + Liquor Bypass®, the circulation liquor required for proper pump operation is allowed to bypass the fabric storage area instead of unnecessarily remaining within the fabric folds inside the J-box.

This creates two clearly separated functions:

The pump receives the liquor it needs for stable circulation. The fabric receives only the liquor required for processing and transport.

The result is stable hydraulic performance without unnecessarily increasing the operating Liquor Ratio.

Low Liquor Ratio is not simply about using less water. It is about controlling where that water needs to be.

The Science of Fabric Dyeing™ – Season 1
Chapter 4 | High Available NPSH
When discussing low Liquor Ratio, most conversations focus on the fabric.
But there is another engineering parameter that often goes unnoticed.
NPSH (Net Positive Suction Head).
A dyeing machine can only operate with a low practical Liquor Ratio if the circulation pump always receives sufficient water at its inlet. Stable hydraulic conditions are not optional—they are the foundation of reliable dyeing performance.
In this chapter, we explain why High Available NPSH is one of the hidden engineering principles behind low Liquor Ratio, stable circulation, and repeatable production.
Because achieving a low Liquor Ratio is not just about reducing water.
It's about understanding the science behind it.

The Science of Fabric Dyeing™ | Chapter 3
Many people assume that the final liquor ratio is determined only by the fabric.
It isn't.
Every dyeing machine also requires water to operate—water for hydraulic stability, pump operation, fabric transport, circulation and process repeatability.
The question is not whether the machine needs water.
The real engineering challenge is how little additional water the machine requires while maintaining stable, repeatable and high-quality dyeing conditions.
That is where machine design makes the difference.
Because in the end, the best dyeing machine is not the one with the lowest theoretical liquor ratio. It is the one that consistently operates closest to the fabric's physical minimum.

THE SCIENCE OF FABRIC DYEING™
Season 1 | Chapter 2
Can a dyeing machine operate at any liquor ratio simply because of its design?
Not quite.
Before discussing pumps, hydraulics or machine technology, we must first understand the physical limits imposed by the fabric itself.
Cotton absorbs water.
The fabric carries liquor.
These are laws of physics—not machine specifications.
The real engineering challenge is designing a dyeing machine capable of operating as close as possible to this theoretical minimum while maintaining excellent dyeing quality, stable fabric transport and process reliability.
This chapter explains why.

In the first chapter of our series, we introduce a simple but fundamental principle:
The Final Liquor Ratio is always the result of both the fabric and the machine.
Understanding this principle is essential before comparing technologies, evaluating performance, or interpreting Liquor Ratio claims.

THE SCIENCE OF FABRIC DYEING
For decades, the textile industry has compared dyeing machines using a single number:
The Liquor Ratio.
But have we ever stopped to ask a simple question…
What actually determines it?
Is it only the machine?
Or is there much more behind this number?
Over the next few weeks, we will launch a new technical series dedicated to one of the most misunderstood concepts in textile dyeing.
