Where to exchange money in Vietnam?

Major currencies can be easily exchanged in Vietnam, for USD and VND and vice versa.

- Currency exchange booths can be found at the airports, train stations, large hotels and tourist areas.

- Many shops such as gold shops, jewelry, and black market as well but it is officially Some people also have reported that it’s possible to exchange money in the gold shop, jewelry, and black market as well but it is technically illegal.

- The best option is to change them into VND at authorized foreign exchange banks which offer better exchange rates. The banks where you can exchange money include State Bank of Vietnam, Agribank, Vietcombank, Tp Bank, etc.

Notes:
- Torn, tatty money is not accepted in Vietnam. Make sure the notes you bring and receive are clean and undamaged. If you happen to have damaged banknotes, you can go to a bank and exchange them for new ones for a nominal fee.

- If you are confronted by people on the street offering to exchange money for a better rate than the official one, it is too good to be true. Either by short-changing you, giving you fake notes or tricking you with the domination of notes, you will be the victim of a scam, so you should avoid these street exchangers at all costs.

How to rent a scooter in Vietnam?

Renting a scooter in Vietnam might be a challenge for the first time. There are a few rules you should follow to make the process easier.

- COST: around 100,000 – 150,000 VND/day ($4,50-$6 USD). You can negotiate a better price if you want to rent the scooter for longer.
- PASSPORT: Take your passport with you, take a copy of your passport and remember that you give the rental place keep the copy and DO NOT leave it there.
- CONTRACT: It should be in English and have all necessary details: deposit amount, rental price, when you should give the scooter back etc.. check the scooter following all the terms in the contract before you sign any paperwork.
- Check your ride carefully for damages. If you notice anything, tell the staff about it and take a picture of the damage. There are two things you must insist on – rear-view mirrors and a helmet. These are the only two things the cops will stop you for not having.
- Go for a test drive. The rental place should allow you to test drive the scooter. Very often scooters make a loud noise when slowing down, or stopping, which might be a sign that there’s something wrong. Remember to check the horn and breaks as they will come very useful. In case that you rent a scooter for a long time, you should change.
- OIL: For those who are going to do a long trip, you should check the oil and get it changed if need be. That costs 3 USD, and it’s really worth it – an engine seizing at high speed is not something to risk.

Typical housing you will find in Vietnam

Vietnam has all the same types of housing structures common to all major cities and rural areas of the world. In Vietnam, there is an obvious difference between urban and rural housing.

Urban housing is commercially constructed of ‘modern’ materials such as concrete, steel, and glass. There are three common types of urban housing.
• Row house/street house
• Detached house
• Apartment

Rural houses or vernacular architecture is designed to meet localized needs and reflect local traditions. A rural house in Vietnam will most certainly have a lot of land for use of integral housing elements such as ponds, yards, and gardens.

Estimated pricing (Nov 2012):

Houses: Between US$800 (€630) and US$3,000 (€2,360) a month.
Serviced apartments: Between US$1,200 (€942) and US$5,000 (€3,930) a month.
Normal apartments: Between US$500 (€393) and US$1,200 (€942) a month.
Room: Between US$350 (€275) to US$800 (€630).

PUBLIC VS PRIVATE HEALTHCARE IN VIETNAM

Public Healthcare

Expats living in Vietnam will find out that the standards of public hospitals are not similar to those found in North America or Western Europe. Public hospitals in Vietnam are generally overwhelmed and poorly equipped.
Doctors and medical staff working at public hospitals will generally only speak Vietnamese.

Private Healthcare

On the other hand, the standard of private hospitals in Vietnam is excellent. Private hospitals located in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City are staffed by doctors from the USA, Korea, Japan, and France, as well as Vietnamese doctors who have trained overseas.
Generally, while prices are still lower than the rates charged in Western countries, specialists who market themselves for the expat population will charge more than those that work with locals.
Doctors and medical staff at private hospitals in Vietnam often speak English and/or French, which makes life easier for expats.
