44 second cycle time, couldn’t force myself to stand here and just get them done, kept wandering off, so I added a pause at the end of the program with an M99

I’ve heard plenty of people say they won’t put simple parts on a 5 axis and that they reserve those machines for complex, high dollar work.

This is a simple 2 op, 3 axis part. No rotation (besides this video), no simultaneous 5 axis, nothing fancy.

But it’s running on the UMC because someone reached out and asked for some help getting some parts done while one of their machines were down and it was open.

I’ll throw a lathe part in the mill, of course I’ll run a 3 axis part in a 5 axis. The machine doesn’t care how simple the part is. If the machine is available, what difference does it make?

From the lathe to the UMC.

Wrapped O-ring grooves around the OD, along with a couple other features.

This used to be a 3-op part, but with the UMC I’ve got it down to 2 ops.

With the right setup and tooling, I think I could get this done in a single op in the UMC. 🤔

Just because I prefer running mills doesn’t mean I’m scared of a turning center, or don’t know how to run one. I do own one, I can program it, set it up and run it just fine.

The lathe gets used when it has to, but if I can put the part in a mill….it’s going in a mill because it’s my preference and you can’t tell me what to do. 😂

4 GREEN LIGHTS TODAY!

EC400 ✅
VF3SS ✅
SL20T ✅
UMC-750 ✅

One question I get asked all the time: How are you powering the machines?

All four are running off a single 30 HP rotary phase converter.

IMTS is right around the corner, goal is to get all this machined and out to finishing, back and shipped out before I head out and close down for a week.

Auctions are a great place to pick up a lot of useful stuff for the shop.

I’ve been slowly adding these pin sets to my collection and managed to pick up five sets for less than the cost of one new set.

I also grabbed an assortment of OSG taps. I use OSG regularly, so I couldn’t pass up 50+ taps for about the price of one. There are a few random sizes mixed in, but you never know when one of those oddball sizes is going to be exactly what you need.

5-axis fun. We’ll see if this plan works out, moving these across three different machines. Unfortunately, they’ll end up in the turning center too. 😅

Still running that round stock in the mills. Should make for a good evening run at about an hour per part.

A whole lot of surfacing with a .0625” ball end mill.
