We are very proud that 8 years ago we saved the ACE Ypsilanti ACE Hardware in downtown Ypsilanti from closing. The previous owners Paul and Don had each worked there for 50 years and were a bit tired and wanted to retire and do their next thing but their real estate broker who they hired to sell the building advised them to close the business, as the building may be worth more with the business gone so the buyer could do something different with the building.

We found that idea horrifying and worked hard to keep this 100 year old business going another 100 years.

We did some market research on what the current ACE offered their customers and what was working that could be expanded on. We discovered during this market research that small engine repair businesses were closing for at a rapid clip all over the place as Americans continue to focus on buy new consumerism and as old timers retire from the trade with no one keeping their business going. (Can you imagine your grandpa saying to you “hey son instead of becoming a doctor or engineer do you want to take over my small engine repair business I run out of my freezing cold/boiling hot garage”)

So we decided to really focus on this line of business to support those in the community who need this service and the community has responded very well bringing us every small engine under the son. To make this story even better, this influx of business has allowed ACE to hire several long time Ypsilanti community members who live right near the store as full time shop mechanics making our ACE a cool new option for those tinkerers and mechanics who don’t want to be cooped up in an office all day to build their career and serve their community. And there really is nothing more satisfying than someone brining a old mower with good bones that has been a little under maintained and won’t start, fix this, fix that, replace that part, grease that, change the oil and roar starts right up good as new!

Please bring your small engines to the ACE!
- lawn mowers
- snow blowers
- w**d walkers
- edgers
- pumps
- generators
- leaf blowers
- chain saws
- lifts

Cool Ypsilanti Ace story shared with me today. If you have any ACE stories send them my way, the team loves hearing your ACE stories.

"I sold yearbook ads every year in high school for Calvary Christian Academy in Ypsilanti. Selling yearbook ads for $50 or $100 a pop wasn’t the easiest thing to do, especially since all of our advertisers were small business owners and those $50 or $100 checks were coming straight out of their pocket. As much as I tried to convince them of the value they were getting for their ad, I knew it was basically charity. There were a few local businesses that I could count on every year to buy an ad and Congdon’s Ace Hardware was one of them. They were always very supportive of the local community. Good folk."
