A great deck starts with what’s underneath it! 🔨
This project transformed a small set of entry steps into a spacious deck with a ramp, Trex composite decking, and wood railings.
Framing for composite decking takes planning before the first board goes down. Here’s what goes into the process:
▪️ Layout and elevations: Establish the deck height, ramp slope, and connection to the existing sidewalk, accounting for the thickness of the finished decking.
▪️ Structural support: Build the framework with footings, posts, beams, and pressure-treated joists to support the deck and ramp.
▪️ Joist spacing: Plan spacing around the specific Trex product and direction of the decking so the boards have the support they need.
▪️ Blocking and borders: Add support where needed for board ends, railing posts, and picture-frame borders like those shown here. Those finished edges start with careful framing underneath.
▪️ Surface preparation: Check the framing for a flat, consistent surface on the deck and an even slope along the ramp before installing the decking with the required gaps and fasteners.
The finished result adds room to relax and a more convenient way to reach the entrance—with details that bring the whole project together.
