Did you know that Labor Day started as an unofficial public celebration on September 5, 1882, in New York City, and became an official federal holiday on June 28, 1894?
The Central Labor Union held the first Labor Day parade in New York City. About 10,000 workers marched to honor working people.June 28, 1894: President Grover Cleveland signed a law. This made the first Monday in September a legal national holiday.
Why It Started? Harsh Conditions: During the Industrial Revolution in the late 1800s, many Americans worked 12 hours a day, seven days a week. Dangerous Work in factories, mills, and mines were often unsafe. Even young children worked long hours for very little pay.
Protests for Rights: Labor unions grew in power and organized rallies. They demanded fair pay, fewer hours, and safe workplaces.
A Day of Rest: The holiday was created to celebrate the contributions of workers and to calm tensions after major strikes, such as the Pullman Strike.
