In 1788, Judge John Cleves Symmes purchased one million acres between the Great and Little Miami Rivers, and Ohio surveyors were tasked with making sense of it all. The boundary work from that survey still shapes property lines in Hamilton County today. Some problems only a surveyor can solve.

Before Chillicothe became Ohio's first capital, surveyors laid out every street, lot, and boundary in the 1796 survey grid that would anchor the territorial legislature. That original work is still readable in the city's layout today. Great cities don't happen by accident.

In 1808, Ohio surveyors mapped what became known as the Firelands: half a million acres in what is now Huron and Erie Counties, set aside for Connecticut residents whose homes were burned during the Revolutionary War. Few land surveys in American history came with that kind of weight behind them, and Ohio surveyors were the ones who got it done.

Every construction project, every property line, every road in Ohio starts the same way: a surveyor on site before anyone else. If you want to be the person everything else depends on, this is your profession.

One of the most rewarding aspects of the profession is seeing field-tested folks like Lou Fries of ConSurv mentor the next generation. Lou recently spent time in the field with Austin Bauer of Arlington Concrete, putting the Stonex S850 through its paces while also celebrating Austin's professional and personal development. It is this combination of industry-leading technology from ConSurv and dedicated mentorship from professionals like Lou that keeps the Ohio surveying community strong.

We wrapped up an incredible trip to Washington D.C. for the NSPS Spring Meeting this past weekend.

It was an honor to meet with both of Ohio's Senators to discuss the critical issues facing the surveying profession today, including Geodesy Prioritization, the Transition Assistance Program (TAP) to help our military heroes transition into civilian careers, and the Alpha-gal Allergen Inclusion Act, raising awareness of a serious tick-borne allergy that impacts our members in the field. Advocacy is how we ensure the next generation has a strong foundation to build on!

Speaking of the next generation: a massive shoutout to the University of Akron team for taking 2nd Place in the national student competition! It's inspiring to see that level of talent and precision coming out of Ohio.

We capped off the week at a Washington Nationals game with some great company: 3 fellow surveyors, one mystery guest, and... a very photogenic lizard. 🦎⚾️

Proud to represent the surveying community on and off the Hill!
