One sign of some improvement in manufacturing is the fact that we are seeing a number of machines being put back into production, sometimes re-purposed for making new parts.
The first picture is a machine that was just completely rebuilt and converted from a standard duty to a heavy- duty machine to expand the customer’s capabilities and capacity.
The second picture is a new planetary machine, customized for knurling and marking fasteners.
The third and fourth pictures are Model A22 three die thread rollers rebuilt for two different customers. These are both over 50 years old. They are now fully productive at current, new factory standards. All rebuilt machines have the same factory warranty as a brand-new machine.

Here's a short video of a Reed Model A22HDC Heavy Duty Computer Controlled Three Die Thread Rolling Machine working with a Universal Robot Collaborative Robot. Threads are being formed on a very high tensile aircraft part. The co-bot system has sensors to detect contact so it can work with operators and if it would bump someone it will stop immediately without harming them. These robots are a bit slower than the high speed SCARA robots we use but work well for small batches of orders which require frequent operator setups. This machine shipped to a Midwest customer.

Several machines shipped recently include a Reed Model 300AVB planetary machine for making automotive parts at a European customer, a Hartford 0-400 flat die machine for making jewelry findings for an east coast US customer, and; two rebuilt Reed Model A22 three die cylindrical thread rolling machines like the one shown for making high tensile automotive parts for a west coast US customer.

In October we built a machine to make automotive hose clamp screws. The Hartford Model 20-225 shown is a high speed flat die thread rolling machine for this job. The stainless steel screw blanks are formed with a groove at the top of the shaft and an asymmetrical thread form to move the clamp in a perpendicular direction when the screw head is turned. Because of this extreme form and the fact that stainless steel resists flowing under pressure, the material heats up during the process and the screws come out of the machine (at a rate of about 150 to 180 per minute) glowing red hot.

Reed Machinery, Inc. recently shipped a planetary thread rolling machine to a customer in the Midwest for making automotive tube nuts. The first picture shows the part produced. Tube nuts are used to connect assemblies like auto brake lines.
The machine uses a carousel to feed multiple parts through the dies at the same time resulting in a production rate up to 380 pieces per minute. The second picture shows the carousel with individual mandrel tips to hold the parts. The carousel has 12 of these mandrels. This Reed machine is selected because of its ability to thread hollow parts at a very high production rate and meet the stringent automotive quality requirements.
The third picture shows the completed machine prior to shipment.

History of a recent machine project
The machine shown in the first picture is a Reed Model A23 three-die cylindrical horizontal thread rolling machine received at Reed Machinery at the end of March of 2021. It was built and shipped to the customer in March, 1972. The second picture shows the original electrical panel label.
After 21 years of service, the customer sent the machine back to the factory for a major service, the rebuilding of the machine head. After this service, the machine was shipped back to the customer in September, 1993.
Now, after another 28 years of service, the machine has returned to Reed for a complete rebuilding. During this process the machine was stripped down, saving only the frame, steel panels and castings. Then it was completely rebuilt with new mechanical and electrical components. The third picture shows the completed machine which was returned to the customer in May after 8 weeks in our factory. The fourth picture shows the new electrical panel label.
So far, this machine has been in production for 49 years and now that it has been rebuilt we expect it will have many more decades of efficient productivity.
This history is not unique to this machine. In the same month we completed rebuilding some Model A22 machines with histories going back to the mid-1950s.

In addition to complete machines and assorted spare parts, Reed Machinery also offers a die drive exchange program for customers using the Reed Model A22 Three Die Thread Rolling Machine.
The die drive is like an automobile’s transmission or differential, transferring power to the machine’s die holders that turn the dies like an axle turns the car’s wheels.
Customers can order a rebuilt die drive and return their “core” die drive which in turn will be rebuilt. Reed re-uses the drive castings and covers but all the gears, gaskets, seals etc. are completely new in our rebuilds. Many customers can accomplish this exchange themselves, saving the cost of a factory service repair and minimizing machine downtime.
The first picture shows some die drive castings and covers that have been disassembled and cleaned for rebuilding.
The second picture shows some rebuilt die drives.

The Reed Model B112 two-die thread rolling machine was made obsolete over 20 years ago with the introduction of the new Reed Model B205 which is about 20% more powerful. There are however many B112 machines still in production.
Reed Machinery, Inc. recently rebuilt one machine for a customer making rod ends. The two pictures show the machine as received and the machine as upgraded and rebuilt. The rebuilt machine now has a modern computer interface replacing the panel with numerous switches which can be seen in the upper left picture of the machine prior to rebuilding.
Reed Machinery completely rebuilds machines to original specifications and upgrades the controls and safety guarding to meet today’s specifications. In addition, rebuilt machines include a one year warranty, the same as a new machine.

This photo shows several views of a Reed Thread Rolling Attachment without the thread rolling dies installed. The Model B18 is a moderately sized thread rolling head that may be installed in a screw machine or CNC lathe to cold form threads instead of cutting them. In use, this simulates the process used in our thread rolling machines. Advantages of thread rolling include a dramatically reduced threading time (from minutes to seconds) and, a higher quality thread in both form and strength.
When a customer has more than a few of parts to thread the cost of the thread rolling attachment and dies pays back with the decrease in machine cycle time. Various types of thread rolling dies are available to accommodate customer part geometries. Reed B Series Thread Rolling Attachments and many common threading dies are available from stock for immediate delivery. Custom dies can be produced in about 2 or 3 weeks

This picture shows the work area of a Reed Model B205 two-die cylindrical thread roller that shipped recently to a customer that makes special locking nuts and bolts for cars, trucks, boats, etc. to prevent theft of wheels, propellers, etc.
The part blanks are fed by hand, one at a time, into the machine for forming. The customer makes a number of unique parts to order so there are small quantities. Part geometries and materials (like 17-4 stainless steel) make this a difficult application.

This short video shows an automated Reed Model A22 forming the threads on spark plug shells at 1 per second. Our system takes blanks from a hopper and feeds them to a vibrating bowl feeder where they are sorted and aligned. The parts are then fed down gravity tracks to be loaded into the machine for forming. During the forming process a monitor measures the forces applied and compares the relationship of force over time to standard samples. If the part is not within the normal parameters it is rejected and sent to a separate container for examination. Each time the machine makes a stroke this cycle is repeated.
In addition, the machine has automatic parts counting, automatic grease and oil systems and, of course, operator safety systems. All made in the USA for spark plugs made in the USA.
