Steel Tube - A Brief History Of Its Origin

Steel tube (and Steel Pipe) has evolved over history. Specifically, metal tube has been around since around 3000 BC. In fact, Egyptians made the first metal pipe from copper. As early as 2500 BC, Chinese used bamboo pipe as a way to transport natural gas to light Peking, their capital.

Steel tube, its history and comparison to pipe explained.

Steel Tariffs, A Very ‘Big Deal’

When US Commerce Secretary did a media blitz holding up a can of Coca-Cola®, he declared steel tariffs as “No Big Deal”. But even pronouncing tariffs on steel and aluminum imports sent prices skyward. Consequently, doubling of domestic steel prices has resulted in higher production and product prices.

Steel tariffs have unintended consequences. Historically, attempts to slow the decline of US Steel production has failed. The collateral damage caused by protectionist policies include higher prices for consumers.

Both Domestic And Foreign Metal Tubing Prices Increase

Supply and demand dictate metal tubing prices. And there is no exemption for domestic steel prices which have already increased 10% since the announcement of Trump's tariffs. The reasons are simple. One reason is that there is a rush to maximize steel inventories of metal tubing and other raw metal products before further price increases. US steel mills have increased production making up for less foreign steel. But why are domestic steel producers increasing their prices as well? It's all about supply and demand. And primarily because they can. The loss of foreign competition has enabled United States steel mills to increase their prices.

Benefits To US Steel Costs US Manufacturers

As the price of steel and metal tubing prices rise, so will manufacturers' costs. Aluminum sheet prices have jumped 20-25% immediately after proposed tariffs were announced. Manufacturers have had to re-evaluate their supply chains. Fabricators who depend on a stable supply have found the volatility caused by the tariffs disturbing. Small and large employers have even been considering layoffs if prices continue to escalate.

"Prices are escalating on our raw products [including] tubing and plate steel, and that's due to volatility and the threat of tariffs," -- Jacob Uhlenkott, Advanced Welding and Steel.

U.S. Chamber Of Commerce Pleads No More Tariffs
It's not only steel tubing prices that have been affected. Over 40 groups have joined with U.S. Chamber Of Commerce urging President Trump not to add new sweeping tariffs specifically against China. Retaliatory tariffs on U.S. exports such as soybeans and grain could hurt the competitiveness of U.S. growers. China, one of the largest importer of American crops could just look elsewhere to buy those products. And, it's unlikely that they will quickly return even if tariffs were reduced in the future.

Volatility Is Bad For Bottom Line

There are unintended consequences to tariffs. Not only do tariffs increase metal tubing prices, though all the industries that use metal tubing will feel its effect. Metal is used not only to build heavy equipment, autos, and planes but is used in all almost every conceivable level of manufacturing. American jobs are at a real risk when the supply chain is disrupted. Businesses and markets do not like unpredictability.

"Tariffs make everybody freeze up," Nicole Sahin of Globalization Partners. "Our clients need to have [some degree of] predictability to build and expand their businesses globally, which includes pricing and sales decisions. Now, any company that relies on steel or related businesses is not as likely to hire salespeople abroad or try to capture new markets." -- Inc.

Declining Investment Worldwide

If the President's intentions were to decrease U.S. trade deficits, the outcome of his tariffs could have the reverse effect. International trade has increased since markets abroad have opened. Free trade has increased investments as domestic manufacturers increased their exports to markets that were previously too costly to sell to. Tariffs will undoubtedly result in lower investment abroad and much less enthusiasm to take risks.

Section 232 Tariffs Imperils US Economy By Disrupting Supply Chain

The Section 232 tariffs to be implemented by the United States threatens not only the engine of the world economy, the US, but also the one under your hood.

Our company has been importing cold-drawn mechanical steel tubing into the US since the early 1960s in service of the distributor and fabricator markets.

Welded cold-drawn mechanical tubes are used to make precision parts for the automotive, machinery, agricultural and construction equipment markets. A majority of the tubes under the hood of your car are cold-drawn steel tubes.

A513 Supply Chain Seriously Interrupted

The supply chain today for cold-drawn mechanical tubing A513 (Type 5, 6) has been seriously interrupted by a substantial reduction in imports. That supply squeeze has resulted in dramatically increased lead times - at least four to five months - and some mills are quoting as far out as October shipments.

Prices are also up, having gained 15% since the fourth quarter of 2017, and are expected to rise another 10-15% in the second quarter of this year; and that’s before you take into account price increases of 5% or more announced by US tube mills.

Tight Supplies And Higher Prices

Tight supplies and higher prices are the result of a trade case targeting unfairly traded imports of cold-drawn mechanical tubing. A final determination in that trade action is expected to be published on Tuesday, April 3.

If US trade officials find in favor of domestic producers, tariffs ranging from 5-187% will be imposed on imports. So we already have a big supply chain disruption in the works and now another 25% is due to be slapped on top of that due to the Section 232 tariff, further unsettling the market.

Punishing Fairly Traded Suppliers Will Hurt Economy

Dealing with unfairly traded imports through anti-dumping and countervailing duty actions is something the industry is used to, but punishing offshore producers who supply fairly traded product with a 25% tariff is counter to the principles of free trade that have brought prosperity to the US and the rest of the world.
