Barrow County Professional Firefighters Association IAFF Local 4780 is a labor union for the City of BCES Firefighters. We proudly represent the members of IAFF Local 4780 pertaining to all elements of: health, safety, and benefits/wages. The local also holds a responsibility to the community to ensure our members are providing the most effective and efficient service possible. We desire to foster a working strong relationship, and hope to build bridges to bring together our community will promoting fire and life safety initiatives. The local is dedicated to work hand in hand with the BOC, the Citizens of Barrow and Department leadership on training, equipment, and other issues. Every year national there are 3,000 civilian and 110 firefighter fatalities. Fire also accounts for 17,500 civilian and 31,490 firefighters injured. The economic impact of fire is a net loss of $11.3 Billion, nationally. Local 4780, PFFG and the IAFF continue to work to minimize this number through safety, awareness, training, and increasing the manpower necessary to fight fires, Technical Rescue, and Haz-Mat. FREEDOM OF SPEECH IS NOT FREE.

On Sept 22, a former member of our organization made an unauthorized post on this page. The content of the post was both not in anyway a sanctioned statement of this organization or the official stand of its leadership and or its membership.

As an organization this body supports an individual's right to free speech and also believes that the subject to which he aired, bringing it to light, needs to be openly discussed by all stakeholders in an open public forum.

However, this page is not a forum for public comment on an individual's veiws or singular persons commentary.

The BCPFA wishes to publicly apologize to both the City of Winder and Barrow County for our breach in security to this account.

Furthermore, we as an organization recognize that this EMS issue is both a heated and tumultuous one for all parties involved. EMS is a critical component of public safety; one we desire to see settleed in a mutually beneficial manner and to the benefit of all stakeholders; one which we collectively, hope concludes with a result putting the needs of the public first!

As this winter storm is set to impact our area we ask that everyone enjoys this event from the comfort of their home... All unnecessary travel should be avoided and the roadways left open for road crews and emergency responders.

If you are forced upon the roadways, please give responders and road crews the right of way and yield the right of way as early as possible.

Please take this opportunity to stay at home and grow closer to your loved ones... This will assist us with the performance of our duties and make it back safe to ours.

Anyone notice the age of the new Barrow County Public Works director?
Will he be able to be a boots on the ground type of director or will he
just be a desk jockey?

Are we getting what we are paying for?

The commissioners are in secret talks with a local privately owned
ambulance service to take over emergency response and transport from the
fire department.
It will cost the county a few million a year and the cost of operating the
fire department won't go down either because no one is going to get laid
off .
What will happen is that the emergency service that we get will slip
because the company that they are negotiating with is well known as a
slipshod organization ran by some local yokels, and you can bet ghsgt the
commissioners will soon be "investing" in this service with their own money
because once this starts it will be a never ending revenue stream for them
with ALL expenses paid by the poor dumb barrow county taxpayers.

HB-216 PASSES HOUSE 148 TO 19!

With a strong turnout from Georgia's firefighters from across the state, HB-216 passed out of the full house today with a overwhelming majority - despite strong opposition from the Georgia Municipal Association.

This is another huge step in our campaign to win workers comp benefits for firefighters who suffer from job-related cancers. Thanks to everyone who answered the call to action and helped make this possible.

Watch tomorrow on CBS-46 for coverage on the issue.

Now its on to the Senate. It's time for YOU to call your state Senator and ask them to support HB-216.

With a broken heart and tears in my eyes.........I can honestly say this is by far the most difficult time ever........I know what cancer and treatment can do to a body and mind as I've watched this transformation. I sometimes wonder if the treatment is worth it in the long haul. It seems to do more harm than good. Nothing is more painful than watching someone at the end of their life because of cancer. Trying to smile and remain positive, but after chemo and radiation ... you know the person is physically changed and they suffer with this sadness. I know many of you do not give a hoot about this message because, of course, the cancer has not touched you. You do not know what it's like to have fought the fight or had a loved one who leads a battle against cancer. For all the men and women I know, I ask you a small favor and only some of you will do it. If you know someone who has led a battle against cancer, still struggling or who passed, please add this to your status for one hour as a mark of support, respect and remembrance. Copy and paste to support those affected by cancer. From your phone or tablet, hold your finger on the message to copy and paste on your page.

We need our citizens to get informed on the needs of Barrow County Emergency Services. We are losing Good men and women every month to surrounding departments. We have a great Chief now who we support and he supports us. We must be able to retain great people which we have trained and trust. We are night asking for much we just need a little help. The best help is an well educated and informed citizen. We need personnel and equipment now!
