If your power is out due to Hurricane Helene and you have any kind of septic system pumping to a drainfield, use water as sparingly as possible until power is restored.

Limit water entering the system to the essentials i.e. toilet use. Keep showers to a minimum. When possible, any water usage that can be done outside and not allowed to enter the wastewater system will help i.e. handwash dishes outside.

If you notice plumbing fixtures on the lowest level of the home beginning to run slowly or gurgle when flushed, this could indicate that the tanks are full and wastewater is starting to fill the 3 or 4-in plumbing that runs from the home to the septic tank. If this occurs, you may risk a back up into the home if further water use occurs.

Until power is restored and the system can discharge accumulated wastewater to the drainfield there is a possibility that the septic system could back up into the home. There is a limited amount of storage volume in the septic system. The storage volume is typically adequate for a 24hr power outage under normal water usage conditions and will last longer with water conservation measures.

Pay close attention to the plumbing fixtures at the lowest elevation in the home as this location will be the first to show signs that the system is full and a backup may be imminent.

Once power is restored, systems may remain in high level for a period of time and local alarm buzzers and lights may turn on. Continue to practice water conservation water for at least 24 hours after power restoration to help mitigate this effect.

We are thinking about all of our customers impacted by the storm and are praying for your safety and the safety and efficiency of the crews working to restore power.
