Joey Marine Products was founded by Captain Drew Salley along with his fishing and spearfishing crews in Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina. The name Joey comes from the juvenile kangaroo and represents his mama roo's pouch. d to have a place to put cell phones on 14-16 hour offshore fishing trips while keeping them conveniently charged and easily accessible. Previously, phones were thrown into a catch-all area in the console rendering them useless when instantaneous photo opportunities would present themselves. When the phones would come out, they inevitably would end up taking up all of the cupholders or cluttering the console and dash. Another problem needing a solution came from fishing out of Wrightsville Beach, where it is about 50 nautical miles to the fishing grounds in the Gulf Stream. Once a phone heads offshore of about 12 nm from the hill, cellular service is gone. If one forgets to put their phone into airplane mode, it will be dead in a matter of only a couple hours while it tries to search for a non-existent signal. Even if a charging cable was present on the boat, everyone knows how corrosive the saltwater marine environment is to electronics- especially charging cables and 12 volt cigarette lighter outlets. Even if all of this is functional on the boat, charging cables present their own inconveniences and clutter. The first prototypes of the Joey were simply phone holders made from King Starboard to give everyone a place to keep their phones on the outside of the console where they were easily accessible. As time progressed, and technology charged forward with the wide adoption of QI wireless charging for cell phones, the team thought it would be awesome to incorporate that into the phone holders... and alas, the Joey was born! The new Joey is constructed of King Starboard available in 3 colors, and has the QI charging transmitter sealed inside with ZERO moving parts making it UV stable, waterproof and extremely durable in the harsh marine environments we live, work and play in.
