METALfx Employee Spotlight

RICO COCKRALL, METALfx Production Supervisor

Thanks Rico, for letting us Celebrate you with this Employee Spotlight!

Graduating locally from High School in Ukiah in the 1990’s, Armando “Rico” Cockrall joined the U.S. Army and was stationed in Louisiana where he served in the Artillery. After serving in the military, he returned home to Mendocino County. He began a short stint in the lumber industry and soon took an opportunity with Maverick Enterprises in Ukiah that lasted for the next 25 years and provided him with vast background and experience in manufacturing working with aluminum from printing to the ink department. At Maverick he progressively moved up the ranks in leadership, becoming a Nightshift Production Lead before leaving to pursue other opportunities.

In 2021 he was actively recruited by METALfx General Manager of Operations Adrian Lopez, who had worked with him previously at Maverick, and the rest, as they say, is history.

December 2021 saw Rico onboard with METALfx first in a role as second shift Coordinator in Powder Coat, then learned Silk-Screening and quickly earning promotion to second shift Production Supervisor in September of 2022.

A proponent of training and cross-training, Rico says that when he first started taking on leadership responsibility for the areas in operations outside of his original departments of powder coating, and the silk-screening he was vocal about expressing his need to go out on the shop floor in the various departments to work alongside associates in all the departments as much as possible. “It helped me to understand the unique challenges being faced in different departments, tools that were needed, PPE specific to each area so that I could make an impact, be a solid support for the people and was supremely important to my growth into the supervisor position.”

In addition to being an enthusiastic promoter of his team, Rico gives shout outs to his teachers. “Tyson (Frost) was a fantastic mentor when I started…very strong leader, great teacher…Jeff (Duncan) also an awesome teacher and mentor – very honest, extremely straightforward, Rick (Hendrix), Sean (Convery), Don (Manion), all were and still are great supports and great guys to work with.” Rico’s managers have good things to say about him too, saying that he always exhibits a high attention to detail, has that quality control mindset, and always puts in whatever effort is needed to finish the job.

In keeping with his people-oriented, team-focused leadership approach, Rico says he likes to be an advocate for his team while making sure everyone understands the processes and the way to do this is through providing the best training. “The more knowledge the better!”

Rico relocated to Willits from Ukiah back when Maverick had opened a tin facility location here and when they closed it to keep just the Ukiah location he decided to stay.

“I really like living up here, the town, the people and I love working at METALfx a great team all round. No more commute, spending less, awesome people, great employee benefits package, what could be better?

Huge Thank You to Mendocino College North County Center for allowing METALfx to participate in your North County Center College Day! We had a great time meeting with over 100 High School Students from Whale Gulch High School, Leggett High School, Laytonville High School, Round Valley High School, Willits High School, Willits Charter: A Public School for the Arts & Sciences, Sanhedrin High, and Anderson Valley High School and having the opportunity to share with them the many exciting career opportunities in manufacturing that we offer right here in Willits. What a great group of students. Juan, Aldo and I all enjoyed talking to all of them!!!!

Special shoutout to Juan, our Weld Shop Lead and Welding Training Program Instructor, and Aldo, our TIG Welding Training Program Graduate! Thanks for all your help guys!!!!!

METALfx Employee Spotlight

RICK HENDRIX, METALfx Production Manager
~ Celebrating 29 Years & Going Strong! ~

Congrats to Rick who will be Celebrating 30 years with METALfx in just a few months, but we just couldn't wait to Celebrate him!

Born and raised in Willits, Rick enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1988 and spent six years in the Marines where he was deployed to multiple conflicts including the Gulf War and Somalia. Returning home in 1994 he started working at AM&D (now METALfx) as a Production Worker.

Just a few years later in he was promoted to Electronic Assembly Technician Lead of the Industrial Finishing Equipment Division (IFED). Then after the sale of IFED in 1999 he transferred to the AM&D Planning Department as an expeditor where he then worked his way up to the Lead Coordinator position.

10 years later he was promoted to Manager of Scheduling and Shipping and a few years afterward was promoted to first shift Production Manager.

Rick: "Being with the company for 28 years I’ve been able to watch the company grow and keep up with technology. I have seen a lot of changes over the years and the last couple years have definitely been the most exciting as the focus on community involvement and employee retention has increased in very positive ways.

Willits is where I was able coach at the local schools and to raise my kids before they went off to college, where my wife has been a schoolteacher for 20 years, and where we get to enjoy our shared passions for the outdoors and dirt bike riding which is abundant in the area. Being part of such a great company in my hometown has allowed me to live the life I enjoy in this great community.

Thank you Rick, for 30 years of dedicated, amazing service, hard work and loyalty to METALfx and your team and for allowing us to put the spotlight on you!

METALfx Employee Spotlight ~ Rick Evans, Engineering Manager

Join Us in Congratulating Rick Evans, METALfx Engineering Manager for earning the title of longest continuously serving METALfx employee!

Rick has enjoyed working for METALfx for decades since he joined the company in 1983 when “(as a) young man (I was) bouncing out of living at home and decided it was time to stop being stupid and get serious about a job.”

A Mendocino County native born in Fort Bragg, Rick grew up in Willits and started with METALfx (then AM&D) in 1983. “I started as a janitor sweeping floors and cleaning bathrooms.” Four months later he was working on the shop floor in Deburr and Graining. “I slowly worked my way up through the shop to become a Journeyman Sheet Metal Fabricator, was Shop Boss for awhile, basically worked my way through the shop; press brake, fasteners, assembly….workwise on the plant floor I have really done everything. Sometime between then and now I was given an Engineering Managing position.” Rick is currently the METALfx Engineering Manager.

A Production Shift Manager before moving into Process Control, then to Estimating and by his 20th year anniversary in 2003 he was promoted to Engineering and Estimating Supervisor and currently leads the METALfx engineering team in his role as Engineering Manager.

Rick is very happy to see the growth in the Company over the years and in the employee culture. He highly approves of the current company focus on employee development, especially in the utilization of crosstraining. He said he is very glad to see the opportunities for advancement and development being offered to new employees just coming on board.

Rick looks forward to continuing to enjoy his work at METALfx and to mentoring, training, and developing the engineering department to support company growth.
