2️⃣ Missed calibration: Devices need calibration every 30–180 days (state-specific). Missing it can lead to a service lockout.
3️⃣ Tampering: Any tampering is detected and results in a lockout. Wait until you’re sober to avoid issues.

While we commend the efforts of New York for their revised DMV rules (referred to as the “Forfeit After Four”), aimed at habitual impaired drivers, we are disappointed the rules fall short of addressing the core issue of combatting impaired driving by strengthening the use of ignition interlock devices (IID).

Ample studies show license suspension/revocation alone doesn’t work – 75% of people continue to drive on a suspended or revoked license. More than 8,000 people continue to die each year in crashes by drivers with suspended or revoked licenses.

IIDs are a proven, effective countermeasure that reduce recidivism by up to 70% among first-time, high risk and repeat offenders, while installed. IIDs allow offenders the ability to carry out their necessary daily tasks, like going to work, or fulfilling family obligations – while preserving public safety.

Impaired driving is 100% preventable and IIDs play a critical role in making our roadways safer.

Using your ignition interlock device is simple when you follow the correct steps. Before starting your car, submit a clean breath sample.

Remember, attempting to start your car without submitting a sample could be recorded as an unauthorized attempt in some states, which may result in a violation. If this happens, remove the key and wait for the countdown to expire before trying again.

When you turn off your vehicle, always check your device for any random retest prompts—even if the car is no longer running. Completing the retest prevents lockouts and ensures you stay compliant.
