Kirk's Story: Birth of the Aurora

I have been professionally painting for about 6 years before taking a job painting military vehicles at a local body shop to make my way through college. We painted 5 ton trucks in poor lit conditions and the many angles created dark shadowed areas. Even properly lit areas create shadows on the product that is being sprayed. The only solution would be a product p

hysically attached to the spray gun. I began to envision, design, prototype, and develop the Aurora, an innovative product that attaches directly to the paint spray gun. Thus giving technicians better illuminated visibility to increase efficiency, decrease material costs and decrease technician error. This lightweight and durable product is having a major affect in the cosmetic process in the following industries: automotive, aircraft, boating, construction, and custom artwork. Not only does the Aurora provide better illumination but provides a state of the art color matching feature and a never before seen pattern center confirmation. Our mission is to help technicians create better finish products no matter the light environment. Come see us at lumaiii.com and see if the Aurora fits your spray gun. Innovation

You can clean a panel and still leave it electrically charged.

Plastic parts are especially prone to static buildup during prep, and something as simple as wiping or rubbing the surface can contribute to that charge. The panel may look perfectly clean, but static can continue attracting dust, lint, and other airborne contamination right back toward the surface.

That means a clean-looking bumper can still carry one more variable into the booth.

In this video, we break down why static matters during automotive paint prep, how friction can contribute to charge buildup, and why neutralizing the surface before final tack and spray can help reduce contamination risk.

The goal isn’t to replace proper cleaning, blow-off, or tack procedures. It’s to add another layer of control by addressing the electrostatic charge that can keep pulling debris back to the panel.

Clean doesn’t always mean neutral.

The Luma III Ion X Pro is designed to help neutralize static charge on automotive panels before paint, helping painters reduce one more source of contamination and create a more controlled refinishing process.

Professional Habit #8: Clean the Air Cap

A small amount of material buildup on the air cap can change more than you think.

As paint or clear begins collecting around the horn holes and air passages, the spray pattern can start to distort. Atomization may become less consistent, one side of the fan can get heavier, and suddenly the gun feels like it isn’t spraying the way it did on the previous coat.

Before changing pressure, adjusting the gun, or blaming the material, inspect the air cap.

Between coats, take a few seconds to check for buildup and clean it properly when needed. It’s a simple habit that helps keep one more variable out of the booth.

A clean air cap helps maintain:

* Consistent fan shape
* Even atomization
* Predictable material delivery
* Better consistency from coat to coat

It doesn’t take much contamination in the wrong place to affect the pattern.
