Summer heat can change how expansion joints behave. As concrete expands, joints compress. If the fire barrier is not sized for the application, that compression can put too much pressure on the barrier inside the joint assembly.

That is why fire barrier selection should account for the joint width, expected movement, compression range, fire rating requirements, and cover system being used.
