A good fire protection system starts with understanding how the pieces work together.

On Sept. 15, Balco will be at the Chaparral facility in Texas for a dual training covering fire-rated expansion joint systems and Metacaulk® firestop systems.

The session will look at two very different conditions in fire-resistive construction: protecting building movement joints and firestopping pe*******ons where utilities pass through rated assemblies.

We’re looking forward to a great training and conversation with the Chaparral team.

The new Balco NXD No Bump Extreme Duty expansion joint system is designed for larger joint gaps and heavy-duty loading without creating a rough transition across the floor.

NXD accommodates joint sizes from 3 to 18 inches and allows for expansion, contraction, and lateral movement. Fire barrier and water barrier options are also available.

For projects where larger gaps and heavy loads come together, NXD provides a new standard option in the Balco expansion joint line.

Not sure which firestop product fits the application?

Start with the opening.

The interactive firestop product selector in the Metacaulk® section of the Balco website uses visual application guides to help narrow the options based on what needs to be protected.

It gives contractors, specifiers, and other project professionals a faster and logical starting point when working through Balco's Metacaulk® firestop products.

Interior firestop does not always mean dry. Exterior does not only mean weather.

Moisture, movement, installation orientation, joint configuration, and the type of pe*******on can all affect firestop system selection.

Our latest article covers the conditions contractors need to review before installation and where Balco’s proven Metacaulk® 835+ firestop product fits within tested systems for interior and exterior applications.

Routing utilities near a large seismic joint starts with the right questions:

• What movement does the joint need to accommodate?
• Where will piping, conduit, and cable trays run?
• Do flexible connections have enough room to move effectively with the anticipated building forces?
• Could the joint affect access or the building enclosure?
• Are fire barriers and utility pe*******ons detailed separately?

Our latest article covers how project teams can coordinate these details around Balco’s robust and innovative QuakeSpan™ systems before utility routes and support locations are finalized.

How can marble or stone stairs gain added slip resistance without visible mechanical fasteners?

Balco’s abrasive bar stair nosing uses a proprietary slip-resistant epoxy abrasive adhered within a recessed surface. The flexible strips are designed for marble and stone applications and are available in block, bullnose, and angled profiles.

The abrasive bars can also be applied to radiused stairs, providing flexibility for curved stair designs. Options include multiple abrasive colors, widths of 1, 2, or 3 inches, and lengths up to 4 feet. The systems meet ADA guidelines for slip resistance and may contribute to LEED credits.

Large plastic pipes in gypsum walls may require different firestop approaches based on the pipe material, size, and listed assembly.

In this Coop’s Corner episode, Balco’s Steve Cooper reviews multiple UL-listed solutions, including tuck-in devices, intumescent sleeves, and sealant-only applications.

He also explains why product compatibility matters when firestopping CPVC pipe and how incompatible materials may contribute to environmental stress cracking.

In a power station, piping, conduit, cable trays, and fire protection lines (among other items) may pass across or near a large seismic joint.

A flexible connection can be properly specified and still lack enough room to move properly. The same issue can affect utility supports, fire barriers, and joint covers when each system is coordinated separately.

Our latest article covers five questions project teams should consider when routing utilities around Balco’s highly-effective QuakeSpan™ seismic and base-isolation expansion joint systems.
