Colonial Seal Company supplies both standard and custom made PTFE Back-Up rings. PTFE back-up rings are available in multi-turn spiral cut, solid uncut(endless) and single-turn scarf cut(endless split) profiles. These PTFE back-up rings prevent o-rings from extruding when operating under high pressures and temperatures in both static and dynamic applications. Although these back-up rings offer no positive sealing function, they do provide protection and support to the primary sealing element, typically an o-ring.

Seal case considerations for optimal seal performance: The construction of a typical rotary shaft seals consists of several interrelated components. When combined, these components which include lip material, case design & material and sealing element geometry offer a wide selection of designs for OEM’s to choose from. Familiarity with these components and understanding their interaction with each other is critical in effective shaft seal design. This article will assist equipment manufacturers and maintenance professionals by highlighting the
basic considerations of the shaft seal case. We will examine the basic rotary shaft seal case profiles and identify the major seal case materials used in the industry. Additionally, the article will attempt to cross reference the various national standards of metals used for seal case design. More:

Standard rotary shaft seal profiles supplied by Colonial Seal Co. are either metal cased or fully rubber covered. These profiles can either replicate existing designs, or Colonial Seal can recommend alternative designs, if standard profiles will not meet customer needs. The seals are available in many variations of standard materials such as Nitrile (NBR), Fluorocarbon (Viton®), Silicone (VMQ), EPDM, Polyacrylate, PTFE (Teflon®) in both standard and metric sizes.

Critical Seal Design Tolerance Charts: These tolerances for nominal diameters are published by the Rubber Manufacturers Association and are in use by most major seal manufacturers. The tolerances recognize for instance, one critical point of contact in a shaft seal as the point between the seal OD and the housing bore. Shaft seals are typically press fit into a housing bore and to ensure a snug fit, the seal OD is produced larger than the housing bore. More:
