Feeling proud of our LightWorks, Inc. team! This week, we implemented a large 3-day mock-up of light fixtures for the new KC Luminary Park. The culmination of many weeks of organizing, gathering equipment, building platforms, mounting mechanisms, wiring, etc. The process reviewed 42 fixtures representing 17 manufacturers covering 7 applications for the project. We all gained insightful first-hand experience with the products - truly enlightening!💡

LightWorks accomplished this in cooperation with lead lighting designers from Buro Happold, along with architects from OJB Landscape Architecture and BNIM.

Exciting things are on the horizon for KC!

What a week!! Great work team!

Kathi is celebrating 24 years of passion, creativity, and heart poured into LightWorks. An award-winning designer and engineer, she built this company from the ground up with intention — not only to pursue excellence in lighting design, but to create a workplace rooted in connection, balance, and being present for life’s moments. Every part of LightWorks reflects her vision, and we’re so grateful for the light she continues to lead with.

From the Archives:
Douglas Avenue Railroad Underpass - Wichita, KS

As part of an overall vision to transform the existing underpass into an inviting gateway into the Downtown, lighting was integral. The lighting design worked with the pigeon mitigation netting - a new one for us! By introducing subtle perimeter wall washing and accent lighting to highlight the interesting railroad structure, the space becomes a safe portal for pedestrians while calling attention to the bridge details.

The University of Kansas Medical Center proudly unveiled a new central reflection space within the Orr Major Building. This peaceful sanctuary, thoughtfully created from a renovated section of the ground floor that once housed the university bookstore, invites students, staff, and visitors to pause, reflect, and find tranquility amid their busy lives. Designed to promote an inclusive environment of faith traditions, spirituality, and introspection, the Reflection Center encourages us to nurture the sacredness within ourselves, our community, and beyond, fostering growth, understanding, and connection.

The lighting aims to highlight key features such as the entry prayer wall, the interior fountain, and the peace pole, drawing attention and creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere. The lobby’s decorative lighting, inspired by the soft glow of candlelight vigils, adds a symbolic and sparkling touch that enhances the overall ambiance.

Inside the gathering rooms, light filters across the sculpted ceiling panels, producing a warm, ambient glow. Vertical lighting emphasizes activity and accentuates the space’s architectural features.

Last Tuesday, LightWorks had the pleasure of welcoming a group of international high school girls with a passion for STEM to our studio. We introduced them to our industry and gave them a behind-the-scenes look at the work we do. We partnered with our neighbors at STRATA to share insights, and wrapped up the visit with a hands-on problem-solving activity. The students’ curiosity and enthusiasm for STEM were truly inspiring! A big thank you to GlobalTiesKC for including us in this meaningful experience.

We’re wrapping up our Meet the Team series with the heart of our studio — our founder, Kathi Vandel.

Kathi has always been drawn to the unique blend of creativity and technical precision that lighting design demands. A proud Architectural Engineering graduate from Kansas State University, she began her career as an electrical engineer. But her passion continually pulled her toward lighting — a path that became clear after meeting a few inspiring independent lighting consultants early on.

Today, Kathi wears many hats at LW — project manager, designer, and lead engineer. She’s hands-on in every phase of the work, guiding our collaborative studio with vision, energy, and a deep love for the craft.

She’s known for her sharp eye for detail, rock-solid calculations, and deep knowledge of lighting specs—all of which shine through in the great work she does every day. With degrees in both Architecture and Architectural Engineering from the University of Kansas, Katie is someone we all learn from—coworkers and clients included!

Re-introducing Jonah Vandel!
Jonah plays a key role in our drawing production, handling everything from calculations and layouts to specifications with precision and care. A proud graduate of Kansas State University, he brings a well-rounded background in horticulture design and install — plus hands-on experience in landscape lighting installation. Hoping to expand this service soon!

Beyond his technical skills, Jonah is our in-house food enthusiast and the go-to source for all things culinary in the studio. He’s also full of great stories—ask him about his internship experience working in the Hamptons doing landscape lighting!

With his calm and steady presence, Jonah is always ready to jump in and lend a hand wherever it’s needed.
