Engineering at the Extreme: How Rheotherm Conquered the Gulf of Mexico
When a leading pump manufacturer needed a chemical feed measurement system capable of measuring flow rates as low as 0.11 GPH at 10,000 psi — in one of the most hazardous environments on Earth — they turned to us.
In our latest blog, we share how our engineering team developed a custom Rheotherm solution for offshore oil platforms in the Gulf of Mexico, combining:
· Super Duplex 2507 metallurgy for extreme pressure and corrosion resistance
· Intrinsically safe design for Class I, Div. I hazardous area compliance
· Custom NEMA 7 explosion-proof electronics housing up to four remote sensors in a single enclosure
The result? A system that has been operating reliably for 15 years — and counting.
If you have a challenging flow measurement application in a hazardous or extreme environment, we'd love to help you engineer the right solution.

From mountain snowpack to your tap — Rheotherm flowmeters have been helping make that happen for over 30 years.
The American West is facing a water crisis. Over 40 million people depend on the Colorado River, and traditional water sources are under increasing stress. Cloud seeding has emerged as one of the most proven, cost-effective tools available to help — and for decades, Rheotherm flowmeters have been at the heart of it.
Since 1991, Bionetics (formerly Intek Inc.) has partnered with the Desert Research Institute (DRI) to support cloud seeding operations across the western U.S. DRI's generators operate autonomously in some of the most remote and unforgiving environments imaginable — buried under 8 feet of snow in winter, baking in 120°F heat in summer — and our flowmeters have kept running through all of it.
The numbers speak for themselves: DRI's program generates roughly 10,000 acre-feet of water per year — around 3 billion gallons — managed by just a two-person team. Independent analyses consistently show benefit-to-cost ratios exceeding 10:1, making cloud seeding one of the highest-return water management investments available today.
As climate variability intensifies and water demands grow, reliable instrumentation isn't just a technical requirement — it's a critical piece of the solution.
We're proud to play a role in that mission.

When a power plant began experiencing high condenser back pressure and reduced performance, an engineer suspected that one of the plant’s liquid ring vacuum pumps was degrading. However, maintenance approval required clear evidence before the pump could be taken out of service.
Using a RheoVac Condenser Air In-Leak Monitor, the plant was able to compare the performance of two vacuum pumps operating on the condenser. By monitoring the exhaust capacity and air removal performance, the data clearly showed that one pump was underperforming relative to the other.
This data-driven approach provided the proof management needed to approve maintenance and address the degraded pump before condenser performance declined further.
Result:
• Confirmed degraded vacuum pump performance
• Provided clear operational data for maintenance decisions
• Helped protect condenser efficiency and plant output
Real operational challenges often require clear, defensible data. RheoVac monitoring helps plant engineers move from suspected problems to proven solutions.

Condenser air in-leakage can quietly impact vacuum stability, increase heat rate, and reduce generating capacity — often long before the root cause is clearly identified.

Our latest case study highlights how continuous air in-leakage monitoring helped a 500-MW power plant diagnose severe condenser air in-leakage, stabilize performance, and recover lost efficiency.

Real-time data. Actionable insights. Measurable results.

🧼 Looking to improve your sanitation processes?
Rheotherm flow instruments are designed to meet 3A sanitary standards to ensure a clean and hygienic process.

What are 3A sanitary standards?
✅ Guidelines that are used in food and pharmaceutical production to ensure clean, hygienic processes.
✅ Its based on the design, material, and construction of equipment that helps to prevent contamination.

What are the benefits to meeting 3A sanitation?
✅ Eliminates the risk of cross contamination
✅ Prevents bacterial growth
✅ Enhances food safety
✅ Improves product quality
✅ Easy to clean and maintain
✅ Easily integrates with data recorders, PLCs, and other monitoring systems

All Rheotherm instruments meet 3A sanitation because:
✅ There are no sharp corners or crevices to prevent bacteria from forming
✅ They are made of 316L stainless steel
✅ They have an easy to clean design
✅ They can withstand high temperatures and harsh environments
✅ There are no moving parts to minimize maintenance and potential contamination

What are the advantages of Rheotherm instruments:
✅ Easy to clean and maintain
✅ Cost-effective
✅ Has sensing elements can be mounted on outside of flowtube
✅ Flow and temperature monitoring
✅ Meets highest hygiene standards

🛠 Overall whether you're upgrading your current system or building a new process line, our Rheotherm flow instruments are a great choice to deliver the highest sanitary standard.

🛠 Rheotherm flow meters used in cleaning in place processes

Cleaning in place is an automated process that allows plant equipment and pipelines to be cleaned without disassembling or opening the system. CIP disperses cleaning solutions through the system to complete sanitation

CIP processes are beneficial because it:
✅ Reduces frequency of breakdowns
✅ Extends lifespan of equipment
✅ Enhances operational efficiency and minimizes disruptions
✅ CIP allows the usage of stronger cleaning chemicals
✅ Has a hygienic design and integrated process
✅ Environmental and cost efficient
✅ Meets FDA, USDA, and international regulatory requirements

Some challenges involved in CIP systems include:
✅ Equipment like polymeric membranes in filtration systems, can be sensitive to harsh chemicals
✅ As cleaning solutions are reused, you must monitor the effectiveness and replenish chemicals when necessary

So where do Rheotherm flow meters come in?
✅ Flow meters are used to measure and monitor the flow of a wide range of fluids like cleaning chemicals, food additives, and other process fluids
✅ These meters are designed to withstand CIP procedures, which involve exposure to harsh chemicals and high temperatures

Benefits of using Rheotherm flow meters:
✅ Provides real-time monitoring of chemical and additive flow rates
✅ Reduces operational costs
✅ Optimizes resources used
✅ Each batch meets the highest safety and quality standards
✅ Easy-to-clean sensor design
✅ Highly durable and not damaged by demanding conditions
✅ Reliable long-term performance

The difference between CIP and sanitation:
➡ CIP focuses on the removal of product residues from the plants internal surfaces and does not address microbial contamination
➡ Sanitation is performed after CIP and eliminates harmful microorganisms. Sanitation involved the use of chemical sanitizers or physical methods like steam or hot water
