Project lake find update! Crank but no start back to running. Heat cycled the motor, ran the track a bit and it’s almost ready for a test run on the snow! Lesson from this sled is that if you have low compression check your reed valves before assuming you need a full top end rebuild.

It’s alive!!! Hopefully it stays that way. I still have a lot of clean up to do on this sled to get the silt and hay debris out of everywhere. I broke a ni**le on the coolant expansion tank so I can’t run it much until my new one arrives. Pretty stoked about this one. Hopefully this is a testament of how well sleds are built.

If you find pig in a poke kind of deal send them my way. Maybe it will be my next project.

Cutting off the old spring hangers on this xj is no joke. It has required a much more delicate approach than I first anticipated. Today’s progress involved getting the last of the hangers off and cleaned up. Then the wonderful process of mock up began. At this point the new adjustable rear hangers are fully welded and painted. The front hangers are only tack welded in place. Tomorrow I will continue to fine tune the shackle angle by moving the front hangers if needed. As it sits currently it’s very close to where it wants to be. The .desert.fox is going to ride like a Cadillac with the new shackle angle.

I haven’t had nearly as much time this weekend as I was hoping for. Made some quick progress on .desert.fox today. Rear bumper, rear axle, leaf springs, and shackles are removed. The right rear shackle hanger is removed and the new rough stuff adjustable mount is mocked up. Most of the front leaf hanger is also removed as well. The front is putting up much more of a fight than the rear, but I’ll win this fight. I always do.

update! Progress is slow but steady. We are finally to the stage of setting out gaps and doing the metal work! Lots to fine tune as always but once we get plugging away at it, the changes should happen pretty quick. If you have any questions comments or concerns please comment below and I will do my best to answer them.

In class yesterday we played with some panel bond. We performed destructive testing on test panels. Some of them had only panel bond, some weld bonding, and some rivet bonding. Amazingly all of our panels held at least 4,000 lbs of pulling pressure before they failed and usually the steel of the panel tore rather than the bonding adhesive.

Pulling transmission on the jack stands is always fun. This is out of a 2012 Audi a3 where I am replacing the dual mass flywheel. Yes, that’s right and flywheel for an automatic transmission. The Audi / vw trans doesn’t have a torque converter. It is a dual clutch sequential gearbox.

Good progress so far this week. The 1/4 pannel@on the jimmy is welded in and ground. Still some fine tuning before it will be ready for filler but it’s not far off. Keeping that body line in check was extra fun.

Then next into the shop is…..another 12 a3 tdi with a blown turbo. The wife took mine to work this week and loved it. This one happened to pop up on the market so I snagged it and I’ll be doing a load of general maintenance as well as a new turbo. Hopefully this time goes a little quicker than last time.
