Hems are common features in sheet metal fabrication. They’re made by folding an edge back over the sheet, typically to cover a sharp cut edge and add rigidity. But hems come in several styles, and the one you choose can affect your part's appearance and cost.

The two most common are open and closed hems. Knowing the difference can help you specify an edge that does its job without adding unnecessary cost to your project.

Last week, we highlighted the benefits of laser cutting. But how can you make sure you get the best results from the process?

Here's one important tip if you're designing a part with laser cutting in mind: Avoid placing holes too close to the material’s edge.

As a general rule, leave at least one material thickness between the hole and the edge. Aluminum may require twice that distance or more. If closer placement is necessary, we may recommend drilling or waterjet cutting instead.

Your finishing choice should influence a variety of other decisions in your sheet metal fabrication project. Planning around it could help you find savings opportunities.

For example, customers sometimes request powder coating for stainless steel parts. The powder coating might provide enough corrosion protection for the part, so we sometimes ask if they’d instead want to use powder coated carbon steel to avoid the added cost of stainless steel.
