It is that time of year. Aerations and overseeds are rolling and the phones have been busy with the same two questions. Let's just answer them both right here.

How much compost do I need for topdressing?

One cubic yard per 1,000 square feet. That rate holds whether you are running a topdresser, spot dumping and raking it out, or working it in with a fan rake. One yard per thousand. That is your number.

Do I need a 50/50 compost loam blend if there is existing soil on site?

No. If the soil is already there our compost stands on its own. It is fully lab tested, cleared for all uses, and it is the same compost we use in our own potting mixes where independent lab testing came back at 95% germination emergence.

Landscapers who have been using our compost for fall renovations are seeing germination in four to seven days. That kind of result comes from putting down something that is actually alive and w**d seed free.

Here is the real difference between our compost and a loam or compost loam blend. Loam is not a managed product. It carries w**d seeds. In ideal seeding conditions those seeds germinate faster than your turf seed and your customer is looking at w**ds before they see grass. Our compost goes through a managed heat process that cooks out the w**d seed load. High fungal and microbial life. No w**d seeds. Clean every time.

This season has been brutal on lawns across southern New England. Drought, heat, and stress that did not let up. If you are a landscaper heading into fall renovation season you already know what is in front of you.

Not all divot and topdressing mixes are built the same. This one is worth understanding before you order your next load.

Cooked loam and sand divot mixes are heat treated to kill w**d seed. That part makes sense. The problem is heat does not know how to be selective.

The same process that kills the w**d seed kills everything else living in that soil. The bacteria. The fungal networks. The protozoa. The biology that cycles nutrients and makes them available to a plant. All of it. What goes down is sterile mineral fines with some carbon in them.

And then it gets worse. Biology does not tolerate a vacuum. Something is going to colonize that empty ground and with no established community there to compete, what shows up first is whatever is fastest and most opportunistic. Often exactly the w**d pressure you were trying to avoid, plus the pathogens that thrive without competition.

A living compost works the other way around. The biology is already established and already competing. It goes down and goes to work. Holds moisture at the seed. Cycles nutrients instead of just carrying them. Builds structure over repeat applications instead of compacting tighter every year.

One product feeds the soil. The other one fills a hole.

We flipped a pile recently and came in the next morning to find what looked like a scene straight out of Arachnophobia. White threads blanketing the entire surface of the pile like something had moved in overnight.

If you did not know what you were looking at it would stop you cold.

Here is what it actually is and why it is one of the best things you can see on a compost pile.

That is an actinomycete bloom. When you flip a pile that has been running at high temperature you expose the interior, the surface cools overnight, oxygen moves in, and actinomycetes already established deep in the pile colonize the fresh surface fast. That white mycelial growth appears in a single night. It typically disappears within a day or two once the surface dries or you turn again.

We tend to see more of this activity than most operations and the reason comes down to our feedstock. We run a heavy carbon based compost woody material, leaves, brush. Actinomycetes are specifically built to break down the tough stuff that bacteria alone cannot finish. Cellulose, lignin, the fibrous woody compounds that take real biological work to decompose. In a high carbon pile like ours they are well fed and active, especially in these earlier stages of processing.

What the bloom is telling you is that the pile is well aerated, moisture is in range, and the biology is moving from the high heat thermophilic phase into the stage where the more resistant organic compounds start getting worked on. This is where the carbon rich humic structures that make our finished compost perform the way it does actually begin to form.

Not a pile sitting in a field. A living system doing exactly what it is supposed to do. 🌱

Fungus gnat pressure in a potting mix is not a pest problem. It is a materials problem. And it starts with the compost that went into your mix.

Here is the short version of what is actually happening.

Fungus gnat larvae feed on decomposing organic matter and fungi. That means an immature compost that is still actively breaking down is feeding them. It also tends to compress, reduce airflow, and hold surface moisture exactly the conditions larvae need to establish.

This is not bad luck. It follows directly from what you put in the mix.

Two numbers on a compost lab report tell you most of what you need to know.

Respiration rate measures how much biological activity is still happening in the compost. High respiration means it is still decomposing. That decomposition does not stop when it goes into your greenhouse. It continues in your trays.

Maturity Indexour current score is 8. Rated inactive and highly matured with no limitations for use. Respiration is below detectable levels on both measures. The compost is stable. There is nothing left actively breaking down.

Our C:N ratio sits at 20:1 stable, mature, and will not tie up nitrogen in your mix. Moisture at time of testing came in at 37.88 percent below the threshold where biological activity restarts in the bag. Germination emergence at 95 percent. Germination vigor at 89 percent. F***l coliform below detectable levels.

All of this is tested quarterly by A&L Canada Laboratories. Full documentation available on request. OMRI Listed and approved for organic use.
