🌿 LET'S HAVE AN HONEST CONVERSATION ABOUT HORSE MANURE IN LEAF MULCH.

You will see it advertised everywhere. Leaf mulch blended with horse manure — marketed as rich, organic, and natural. To be fair there are situations where well managed horse manure has value. We want to be honest about that. But here is where the concerns start. 👇

🧂 HIGH SALT LEVELS.
Manure based composts tend to develop high concentrations of ammonium, calcium, magnesium, and sodium — all contributing to elevated salt levels. Salts can actually concentrate further during composting as moisture is lost — making the problem worse not better. Elevated salts stress plants and show up as red flags on your lab report.

💊 MEDICATION AND DRUG RESIDUE.
Horses are routinely treated with dewormers, antibiotics, and anti-inflammatories. Research shows 30% of veterinary drugs in animal manure pose measurable ecological risk — and composting reduces but does not eliminate them. If you don't know the medical history of the horses you don't know what residues are in your mulch.

🌱 HIGH AMMONIA FROM URINE.
Fresh horse manure can be so high in ammonia it damages the leaves and roots of plants. Without precise management that nitrogen spike creates more risk than benefit.

🌾 W**D SEEDS AND HERBICIDE RESIDUE.
Horses are poor digesters — w**d seeds survive and can sprout in your beds. Some manures also contain persistent herbicides from treated hay that can stunt or kill sensitive vegetables.
