NEW MANAGER: Colten Marsh was recently promoted to the new manager of Carhart Lumber in Neligh.
Working at Carhart Lumber is nothing new to Neligh resident Colten Marsh. However, his recent promotion certainly is. Marsh was named manager of the Neligh site in January.
After working in other fields, the Missouri Valley native has found his niche at Carhart.
“I have worked in several different sectors. I sold insurance for five-plus years, and I sold real estate for a couple of years. Sales seems to be a good fit for me,” said Marsh.
A six-year Carhart veteran, Marsh’s day now revolves around managerial responsibilities. These include working up takeoffs and estimates for customers for building materials such as lumber, doors, windows and trim.
“Also trying to manage inventory and make sure we are properly stocked to meet our customers’ needs.”
Marsh said his personality and salesmanship help him accomplish those tasks.
“I try to relate to each customer and make their experience here at Carhart Lumber a positive one.”
His background in carpentry has also come in handy.
“I built my house myself with the help of my dad and grandpa in 2013-14 and really learned a lot in that process,” he said. “I then helped my father-in-law build the addition to our house in 2017-18.”
Because he can relate, Marsh enjoys helping people put their dreams on paper and eventually into their projects. Working with customers is his favorite part of the job.
“Every project is a little different, with every customer adding their own twist or allowing me to make suggestions to make their dreams become reality.”
In addition to his personal experience, Marsh has taken several trainings since beginning at Carhart Lumber to grow his knowledge in the home-building sector.
“I have taken an estimating and takeoff course, some leadership training, and several product knowledge training sessions.”
Because he feels there is always something to learn, Marsh plans to continue training as it becomes available.
“I try to do my best to educate myself as much as possible.”
That knowledge also prepares him for the more challenging aspects of the job, such as understanding the details of each project.
“Knowing every part and piece of a house is one thing,” Marsh said. “Then we have to know about the multiple options for every piece. There is so much information to retain and be knowledgeable about so we can help our customers.”
Marsh said being surrounded by a strong team adds to Carhart’s customer service experience.
“We have Zach Wright — he is our flooring expert right now. He has done a great job learning about the flooring world. He is also helping a ton with inventory in the store. We also have Brett Branstiter. He is our yard foreman and is helping a ton with inventory both in the store and out in the warehouse. He has learned a lot since starting here in December, and I look forward to watching and helping him grow as a salesman. He has a great personality and is great with customers.”
According to Marsh, the newest member of the team is Brian Heithoff.
“He is our yard and delivery guy. He has been with us for about a month, is learning a lot and is doing a great job.”
While building is a major interest, Marsh also enjoys time away from work.
“I love spending time with my family. Hunting and fishing are a passion of mine. I enjoy most sports, but football and dirt track racing are probably at the top of the list.”
