Throwback Thursday!

Post WWII, there was a strong surge in service station construction. After the world picked up the pieces and rebuilt, materials for the new structures became available in about 1947-1948. Steel King was back to work to meet the demand. Featured are a picture of a 1940's Shell Station, a 1948 Socony Vacuum Oil Co Mobil gas station (the spelling of Mobilubrication, morphing the words together, is correct in that era), and a 1952 Standard Oil filling station. This was the start of a very busy future ahead for us.

Wacky Wednesday!

In 1941 and the years leading up to it, we made at least a few Semaphore Control Houses. This one is from 1941 for the City of West Allis, WI. Semaphore signaling was an important method of communication.

STRUCTURAL REPAIR COMPLETED: A building inspector visited this site and immediately removed it's occupancy. Not only was the canopy closed to fueling, but the entire convenience store was abruptly closed down too until the canopy was made safe since the main doors to the store were only about 5' away from the canopy. (Typically an area around a dangerous situation is closed in case a building would collapse for public safety, and the two buildings could not be separated.)

The vertical supports met the International Existing Building Code's (IEBC) definitions of "Severe Structural Damage", "Dangerous", and "Unsafe". Luckily this was a table-style canopy. Normally, we conduct structural repairs using the IEBC as guidance, but when the damage is so severe, the building code official must also direct and inspect the repair. We worked with the direction and requirements of the inspector to install 4' tall bottom column replacements, using our original records from 1990 to match up the sizes and anchor bolt spacing. We also made sure that the recommended raised column islands were installed when putting it back together.

Please don't neglect to perform consistent column maintenance, and please don't let them get anywhere near this bad before repairing. The goal is to fix problems before they reach 20% rust.

Throwback Thursday!

Going in order, we are entering the WWII era. During the war, steel was no longer available to purchase, so new construction of our prefabricated buildings came to an abrupt end. Steel King moved it's headquarters to 2328 W. State Street in Milwaukee. Walter Junkerman created a new company to become a Federal Defense Contractor. He named this company Texteel, which was a popular building material in service stations at the time, though the waterproof wiring harnesses we made for the war effort under this name did not use those materials.

In 1943, a 15-year-old from Antigo, WI named Charles Olsen enlisted for Naval Training School and began serving in WWII. He wouldn't officially enlist in the military draft until 1946 when he turned 18, AFTER the war ended. Olsen would later become a fearless entrepreneur and was the future 2nd owner of Steel King.

In the 2 years following the war, while the world was rebuilding, current-owner Walter Junkerman became a Locality Expediter for the National Housing Agency office in Milwaukee, helping to prioritize scarce construction materials to build homes for veterans.

Wacky Wednesday

We were surprised to find this Type "D" Toilet Partition drawing in our legacy body of work. We aren't sure if this is a small standard detail of a larger service station project, or if this is a product we sold on its own in the lean years before WWII. There is quite a variety of work in the late 1930's and early 1940's.

Not only this, but we've uncovered Steel King drawings of roadside stands, semaphore control house kiosks, and an addition to a Harley Davidson building.

Completed new canopy in Waukon, IA. The owner was upgrading piping and tanks. They wanted to replace the canopy as well while the concrete was removed and the site was already disrupted, minimizing downtime as part of their maintenance schedule. Now they are all ready for the next 30 years.

Throwback Thursday!

Today I'm showcasing a very detailed pencil drawing of a 1941 Cities Service Type 51-Z Service Station, done on drafting paper. Cities Service later became known as Citgo in 1965. You can still spot buildings similar to this with lots of angles in use in different towns, often with the building set far in the corner of the lot and sometimes nestled up to another downtown building. The Snow Links building in Waupun reminds me of this Cities Service style.

Then the second picture is a concept drawing for a small roadside filling station done in 1939, just big enough for a single bathroom. Picture your name on the signage.
