College Square is taking shape as a renewed front door to downtown Athens - where the city and the meet every day. This long-anticipated project has been shaped through collaboration among the Athens Downtown Development Authority, SPG, and Sheridan Construction, along with input from stakeholders across the community. The redesigned square is intended to support everyday life downtown - from casual gathering and shaded seating to festivals, markets, and game day crowds. Artistic elements will play a central role in the space. Shade sails will stretch above portions of the plaza, adding both visual interest and comfort. The square is also expected to feature a six-foot steel sculpture by celebrated local artist Harold Rittenberry, adding a meaningful public art presence to one of Athens’ most visible public spaces. Construction is underway now, with completion anticipated this fall.
