If you’ve ever ordered a precision-machined part, you’ve probably encountered the word “tolerance.” But unless you work in manufacturing every day, it’s easy to gloss over what tolerances actually mean and why they matter so much to your budget, your schedule, and the performance of your equipment.

Here’s a straightforward look at what tight tolerances really mean, and how they influence the three things customers care about most: cost, lead time, and risk.

Big news from the CMW Global shop floor.

We've upgraded our waterjet cutting system to the Flow Mach 200c, and it's a serious step forward for what we can do for our customers.

The new machine brings true 5-axis bevel cutting, 3D cutting capability, and a 60,000 PSI intensifier pump purpose-built for the exotic alloys (titanium, Inconel, Hastelloy) that we work with every day. More capability, more precision, all in-house.

That means fewer handoffs, shorter lead times, and a higher level of service for every project that comes through our doors.

We're proud to be a founding partner of BeauPros, a youth apprenticeship program connecting Beaufort County high school students with local businesses and a real career path.

This summer, two rising seniors will spend 6–8 weeks here at CMW Global learning the craft of precision machining, working alongside our team on the kind of work that goes into aerospace, defense, and naval applications. Not a classroom exercise. Real work, real skills, real mentorship.

But the summer is just the beginning. Our hope is that when these young men graduate, they'll join CMW full time while earning their Machining Associate's Degree at Beaufort County Community College, paid for in full.

Beaufort County has always been home for us. Investing in the next generation of skilled tradespeople isn't just good business, it's the right thing to do, and we are so honored to be included in this program.

Your project is only as reliable as the parts inside it. Whether it’s a one-off repair for a critical industrial component or a long-term defense contract, picking the wrong precision machine shop is the fastest way to blow a budget and miss a deadline. The right precision machine shop brings more than just equipment to the table. They bring experience, accountability, and the technical know-how to get the job done right the first time. Here’s what to look for.

When rotating equipment comes in for service, a common request CMW Global (Carver Machine Works) receives is to balance a component “to aeronautical specs.” It sounds like a safe ask to avoid a failure happening again. In reality, it is often an over-specification that adds unnecessary cost, prolongs turnaround time, and, in some cases, requires removing material that does not need to come off. In other cases, it might not be possible at all. Understanding what balancing grades actually mean, and which one your equipment genuinely requires, is one of the clearest ways to get better value from your maintenance and refurbishment program. And CMW Global is here to help you understand which balancing grade is right for your job.

After more than 20 years with CMW Global, we’re congratulating Randy Skidmore on his retirement and thanking him for the impact he’s made on our team and our customers.

When Randy arrived at CMW in 2005, he brought decades of manufacturing knowledge with a career in the metal fabrication and machining industry that began back in 1978. Over the years, he built deep expertise in everything from ASME fabrication and rotating equipment repair to specialized dryer systems. That experience made him an invaluable resource to both our team and the customers he served across eastern Tennessee, western North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida.

But more than the technical knowledge, Randy will be remembered for his incredible drive, competitive nature, and his love for his family.

"Randy has been a cornerstone of CMW for the past 20 years. He brought invaluable experience to our team and set a standard of excellence through his strong work ethic, organization, and unwavering follow‑through. Randy has built lasting relationships across the CMW family and with our customers, earning their trust through his steady commitment and genuine care. His dedication to our customers and to CMW has been tremendous, and we are deeply grateful for the impact he’s made. We'll all miss working with Randy and we wish him all the best as he enters this well‑deserved next chapter," says President & CEO, Lindsey Crisp.

From everyone at CMW Global, thank you, Randy, for more than two decades of dedication and service. We wish you all the best in your well-earned retirement.

That’s something we carry with pride, whether we’re on the shop floor or on the track.

If you’re watching today, keep an eye out for our logo.

When critical rotating equipment begins showing signs of wear, facility managers face pressure from equipment manufacturers to replace entire assemblies, often at premium prices with extended lead times. Original equipment manufacturers typically recommend complete unit replacement as their default solution, maximizing equipment sales while downplaying the viability of targeted component repair.
