First, utility marking should always be discussed before any grinding begins. Underground electric, gas, water, communication, irrigation, and invisible pet fence lines can all be affected by stump and root removal. A professional should help you understand the risks and determine whether utility locating is needed.

Second, a quality stump grinding job is about much more than removing the visible stump. Tree roots often extend many feet beyond the trunk and can continue to create bumps, obstacles, and mowing problems. A professional will discuss which roots should be removed and will typically grind the stump and selected roots to at least 4 inches below grade, allowing for proper soil coverage and grass growth.

🌳 A Newark stump-grinding adventure! 🌳

Sometimes people think stump grinding is all about the stump. If only it were that simple!

This Newark job started with a large stump, but as the first photo shows, the roots had other plans. The roots stretched far beyond the trunk—some reaching nearly 10 feet away from where the tree once stood. The area circled in red shows just how far those roots had traveled beneath the lawn. Grinding a stump often means tracking down and removing the hidden roots that continue to create bumps, obstacles, and mowing headaches long after the tree is gone.

This project took about two hours to complete, and by the time the grinding was finished, there was enough wood chip material to fill up a pickup truck bed. Since the homeowner was elderly, we also hauled away all the chips so there would be no cleanup left for them to worry about. By the end of the job, what started as a stump-and-root obstacle course had been transformed into a flat, smooth, usable area once again.

The second photo shows the finished result. No more protruding roots, no more uneven ground, and no more reminder of where the tree once stood. Just a clean area that blends back into the yard and can once again be enjoyed, mowed, and appreciated. It’s always satisfying to leave a property looking better than when I arrived—and even more rewarding when a homeowner can reclaim a beautiful piece of their lawn.

Spent part of the day in Fairport grinding out a large Honey Locust stump with roots spreading in every direction. Some of the roots had traveled underneath the neighbor’s driveway, and the entire area needed to be leveled back out so the homeowner could add topsoil and restore the yard.

Honey Locust can leave behind an incredible amount of underground growth, and this one kept the grinder busy. By the end of the job, the chip pile was big enough to completely fill my pickup bed. I finished up muddy, dirty, and just ahead of the heavier rain rolling in. Jobs like this are a lot of work, but it’s satisfying leaving behind a clean slate where an old stump used to be.

This week I worked on my first Mimosa tree stump here in Fairport. Mimosa trees are known for their bright pink summer blooms, and the wood inside the stump had some striking natural coloration with golden wood tones mixed with rich reddish-brown streaks.

The stump measured about 30 inches across, with roots extending nearly 72 inches outward. In about an hour, everything was ground down clean and ready for the homeowner’s next plans.

Another satisfying job completed right here in Walworth!

This property had about 40 ash stumps scattered throughout the area, and the goal was to open things up and extend the lawn into this beautiful space. In under four hours, every stump was ground down and cleared out—ready for the next step in transforming the land.

Stump grinding is underway and I’ve noticed something I think homeowners should be aware of.

Just this year alone, I’ve met with several folks who were left disappointed after having a stump removed. The main issue? The job looked finished on the surface, but underneath, roots and the stump crown were still sticking up—leaving the ground uneven and difficult to restore into a nice, flat lawn.

If you’re planning to have a stump removed, it’s worth asking a few important questions upfront. A proper job should leave the area level with the rest of your yard—not mounded, not sunken, and not hiding anything under a pile of wood chips. One good practice is to ask that the chips be left off to the side (at least until you’ve seen the finished grind). Unfortunately, covering the area can sometimes hide an incomplete job.

For a clean, lasting result, the stump and roots should be ground down at least 4 inches below the surface. That gives you enough good soil to grow healthy grass and truly reclaim your lawn.

It’s also wise to ask for a simple guarantee: if any roots or stump remnants show up later, they’ll come back and make it right—no extra charge. I recently spoke with a homeowner who was asked to pay hundreds more just to finish a job that should’ve been done right the first time. That’s tough to hear, and it shouldn’t happen.

One quick tip: after the job is done, take something like a pitchfork or pry bar and gently probe the area. If you’re hitting hard spots, there may still be roots left behind.
