First Operational Satellite Communication System🛰️
It all started in the 1920s when the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) scientists first determined the frequency for radio waves to travel into outer space. This led to the Communication Moon Relay (CMR) project.
In 1954, NRL was the first to transmit and return the human voice through space. Just five years later, the CMR became the world's first operational satellite communication system, linking Washington, D.C., to Oahu, Hawaii.
Though the Moon Relay was eventually replaced, the technologies NRL developed were critical. They laid the foundation for modern satellite communications, which are now essential for the U.S. Navy to stay in contact with forces deployed worldwide.
