It starts as a plain bar of steel.

First, we drift the hole, the eye where the handle will sit, punched and shaped while the steel’s still hot.

Then it’s into the hydraulic press and under the power hammer. Pass after pass, the steel moves until the shape of the ax head starts to show.

No two strikes land the same. That’s what makes it ours.

Watch this one tear right through paper, dragging, catching, nowhere near ready.

Not sharp.

Back to the whetstone. Pass after pass, the edge gets reset. Then a few final strokes on the strop to true it up.

Same blade, same paper. This time it glides straight through without a sound.

That’s the difference a real edge makes.

This is where the tool becomes useful.

We start by splitting the bar straight down the middle, lengthwise, right at the tip.

One side gets hammered flat and curved, a scoop you can use to move coals or lift logs. The other side gets drawn out into a curved point, sharp enough to stoke, shift, and reposition whatever’s burning.

Two tools in one end, built from a single piece of steel.

Straight steel doesn’t stay straight for long in this shop.

We heat the bar and twist it by hand, turn after turn, until it’s got that spiral running the full length of the handle.

Then comes the leaf. Hammered thin, shaped, and worked in at the end, one small detail that turns a tool into something you’d want to hang by the fireplace even when you’re not using it.

Fire Poker — Interlock Handle

This isn’t just a handle. It’s a puzzle in steel.

Two pieces, heated and shaped separately, then forged together so they interlock, no bolts, no welds holding them in place. Just steel fit so precisely it locks itself.

It takes patience to get that fit right. One pass too far and it won’t hold.

That’s the difference between a handle that’s attached and one that’s built in.

Triangle Dinner Bell — The Process

Before there were phones to call everyone in for dinner, there was one of these.

We start with a straight bar of steel, heat it until it glows, and bend it into shape, corner by corner, until it’s a perfect triangle.

Simple tool. Timeless sound. Built the same way it’s been built for generations.
