That's a straight shot through the bore of a stator in our shop, with one of our team on the other side. The stator holds the windings that make an electric motor run, and when it comes to us, every inch of it gets a close look.

The scenario: your big 1,500 HP motor failed, and the only spare had been sitting in a warehouse for FIVE YEARS with no records.

Our call: B, and C if it's critical.

Brand new doesn't mean ready to go. After five years on a shelf, test the windings for moisture and check the bearings and grease before installing it. For a really important motor, have it checked out in the shop first. And yes, start pricing a backup too. 😉

Your big 1,500 HP motor just failed. 😳

Lucky for you, there's a spare in the warehouse. Unlucky for you, it's been sitting there for FIVE YEARS and nobody knows if anyone ever checked on it.

The boss wants it installed today.

A. Install it. It's brand new!
B. Test it and check the bearings first.
C. Send it to the shop to be checked out.
D. Start shopping for a new motor, just in case.

3. What spares you have
4. Who your repair partner is
5. Your backup plan for replacement, transport, and storage

⚡ ALLEN'S TAKE: Yesterday's Make the Call Monday answer!

The scenario: one of six temperature sensors in a 5,000 HP motor's windings was reading about 15°C hotter than the rest, and climbing.

Our call: C + B.

Test the sensor before you trust it, or before you ignore it. Check the wiring and the sensor itself, and check the power supply for imbalance. If the reading turns out to be real, it's time to plan an inspection. On a motor this big, "probably just a bad sensor" is an expensive guess.

⚡ MAKE THE CALL MONDAY!

A 5,000 HP motor has six temperature sensors in its windings. 🌡️

Five read normal. One is running about 15°C hotter than the rest, and it's been climbing all week. Nothing else has changed.

Bad sensor... or real problem?

A. Bad sensor. Keep running.
B. Check the electrical supply first.
C. Test the sensor, then keep a close eye on it.
D. Cut the load and schedule an inspection.

Ever wonder what this big blue tank is? 🤔

It's our VPI tank. VPI stands for Vacuum Pressure Impregnation.

After a motor is rewound, the stator goes in here. A vacuum pulls the air and moisture out of the windings, then pressure pushes resin deep into every gap. Once it cures, the whole winding is sealed up tight.

It's one of those steps you never see from the outside, but it's a big part of why a good rewind lasts.
