Hi everybody,
I thought I could pull it off this year, but I just didn’t have the time to plan things out properly. Our general manager of 28 years, Dave L., left in February, so I've been covering operations here since. I also spent all of March and April (like, every waking minute) moving the whole business back to our original location, just 2 miles away. We've been in the new (old?) warehouse for about two months now, but we’re still getting settled.
I never officially cancelled this year’s Treffen #26 because I really wanted to make it happen, but on top of having zero time to make plans, I just can't get away for 2 1/2 weeks this summer. I have no backup here at the shop now that Dave's gone and Scott is out doing the semi-retired sailing to faraway lands thing. Heck, I went to Italy for two weeks at the end of April and it feels like I’m still playing catch-up!
There were some other factors in the mix as well, the biggest one being that we really thought our downtown here in Ventura would be re-opened this year. We used to have a giant Treffen car show there, but it has been closed since Covid. Ever since the closure, it’s been a real pain planning things on this end of the route, especially with the local VW club losing access to the Girl Scout camp. With everything going on here at the shop, I just didn’t have the time to completely re-invent the last 4 days of the trip, nor did I want to repeat what we did last year, up at Lake 105 Degrees (I gave the lake a new name).
I think we’ll have downtown open again for next year, and the good thing about our new warehouse location is that once we get things under control here (we need to thin out a sprawling junk yard), we’ll have room for 50 buses to camp right here at Airhead Parts. We’ve got a shower and bathrooms and we’re about 1/4 mile from the beach, which makes it 75 degrees instead of 105 up the road at the lake. Back when we had Karmann Ghia only car shows here, we’d get 70+ inside the fence.
So yeah, regretfully, there is no 2024 Airhead Parts Border to Border Treffen. We had to cancel 2020 as well, so it’s not completely unheard of, nor is it the end of Treffen or the end of Airhead Parts or any of the other funny stories that make it my way— I can just imagine the ones I don’t hear!
Now some good news is that some of the regulars are putting together their own camping road trip this year, and I can most probably get away for a couple of days to come say hello to everyone… I think :)
Till we cruise again,
—Andre
p.s. just throwing it out there, but I’m thinking about ending in Ventura next year. Port Angeles to Ventura, with a big car show here at the end— looking for more of a big celebration vibe at the finish, versus a small gathering of the brave few who had the fortitude to go that last 4 hours/190 miles to San Diego, lol. You know, a party the scaredy cats will attend ;)
Maybe swap the 3 country flags out for Washington, Oregon and California flags, and change “Border to Border” to “West Coast Treffen” or something along those lines.
