University of Illinois International Programs in Engineering

University of Illinois International Programs in Engineering IPENG is a part of the College of Engineering that strives to help students gain global awareness through studying abroad.

As a signature program of the college, International Programs in Engineering offers students opportunities to develop intercultural sensitivity, understanding, and skills by studying or working abroad. Significant financial incentives are provided and students can choose from a number of short-term trips as well as summer, semester, or year-long study-abroad programs to enrich their academic exper

ience without extending their time to graduation. An International Minor in Engineering is also available and requires language proficiency and at least six weeks abroad. With knowledgeable staff and assistants, IPENG continues to serve as a great resource to engineering students as they proceed to make international connections through their study abroad experience and academic career at UIllinois.

SUMMER BREAK = SHORT-TERM FACULTY-LED PROGRAMS ARE IN FULL SWING! ☀️🌻✈️⛱️

With the Spring 2026 semester coming to a close last week, we are proud to share that several short-term faculty-led programs for the summer are either happening now or are coming up! Today, we’re highlighting our students in the ARISE cohort () of ENG 199, currently on their adventure in Cambodia! 📚✨🇰🇭

Hosted by Kaya Responsible Travel (), our students are spending most of their time at the Treak Community Centre & Treak Village in the Siem Reap region. Students are tackling engineering-related projects to improve the lives of locals, including making eco-bricks from plastic waste, designing and laying a section of mosaic at a school playground using reclaimed materials, and building homes alongside local builders under their supervision. Outside of this, students are experiencing the wonderful and immersive Cambodian culture, including trying new foods and seeing historical sites & landmarks. There’s another week ahead for this program - we are so excited to hear and see more! 🧱🛠️🛝🌱🙏

A NEW DAY IN THE LIFE IS ALMOST HERE! 🤩🌟

Our Day in the Life Instagram Takeover series returns tomorrow! This is a series where we select different students currently studying abroad to show everyone a “Day in the Life” of their experience. This is posted exclusively on our story, meaning YOU will have several chances to engage and ask questions. This is your opportunity to get an inside look at what studying abroad is like, how cultures and customs are different in other countries, and tips and tricks to make the most of your experience. 🛩️📚🌲

We are excited to showcase Dhanashri Purohit’s Day in the Life tomorrow! Dhanashri is a mechanical engineering student currently studying at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden. Stay tuned in to our story throughout the day, you do not want to miss this! 🧪🔬🇸🇪

SPRING BREAK RECAP - ENG 177 Global Sustainability in Ecuador ✈️🌻🌎

While we don’t normally hold short-term faculty-led programs during Spring Break, we were proud to put together a trip to Ecuador for our GFX Global Sustainability Scholars, who were able to apply environmental sustainability efforts relative to engineering design and daily life in the region. This was the rescheduled trip that was not able to occur over Winter Break, and we are so glad the scholars were still able to participate in the program to the fullest, as they had been working toward it all year! 🇪🇨✨🥳

Partnering with Nido De Vida and All People Be Happy (APBH), students assisted with the agricultural education project they had been focusing on during the fall semester. Efforts included understanding the engineering behind fertilizers (and how they can be crafted using worms, wood shavings, solid microorganisms, and even human f***s), assisting farmers with fertilizer placement and fence installation, and participating in other agricultural tasks to support a sustainable mindset. Students also got to take in extraordinary views, see some farm animals, and regularly interact with the locals during their visit! 🌾🚜🐄🌿

GUESS WHAT? IT’S WEDNESDAY! 🤩🗓️🛩️

It’s time for Worldview Wednesday - our spotlight series featuring IPENG programs and the amazing students who have participated in them across the world. It’s time to go on an adventure to learn more about inspiring opportunities that broaden perspectives and foster global growth. 🌳⚙️🧪

Today, we’re going to South Africa! Over winter break, students in AE 298 (comprised of AE, ECE, MechSE, ISE, NPRE, and Engineering Undeclared majors) visited the country to get a first-hand look at the industry-driven projects in the region. By visiting various aerospace companies & agencies, as well as engaging with several professionals and scientists in the industry, students were able to understand how and why South African serves as the base for the African space community, its impacts on the country and continent as a whole, and how projects are similar to or differ from aerospace goals and objectives present in other parts of the world. Students also participated in immersive cultural experiences. 🚀🪐🇿🇦

➡️ Swipe to see photos, learn more about the program, hear from students who attended, and check out promo videos created by aerospace engineering students Katheryn Kramek and Ashley Sawa!
