Tornadoes can cause severe property damage with squalls that can have internal wind speeds of up to 300 mph. They can be extremely destructive due to the very high pressures. The land area affected by a tornado, which touches ground can range from several hundred feet to upwards of over 100 miles in length, but typically covers a width of 200 feet to a mile and a length of 2 to 20 miles.

FUN FACT: According to recent USA experience, the NFPA indicated that automatic sprinklers were present in only 10% of reported fires over a four-year period. When sprinklers are installed, an average fire can be controlled by 5 or less sprinklers, when the system is designed and maintained to NFPA standards.

In large fires where sprinklers are activated, sprinklers operated 92% of the time and efficiently controlled the fire 96% of the time. In 60% of fires where sprinklers were not activated, the system was found to be shut off.
