🦺Safety Is No Accident

Today marks a powerful intersection of remembrance and action for Elevator Control Service and the elevator industry as a whole. We are simultaneously observing Workers' Memorial Day and our National Stand-Down For Safety Day. As the IUEC holds its annual Global Safety Summit in Las Vegas this week, we ask for all to take a minute and pause work to honor all the fallen elevator constructors and to reinforce the safe practices that protect the ones still serving in the field.

🕯️️ Honoring the Past
▪️We remember our brothers and sisters who didn't return home.
▪️We honor the families whose lives were changed by workplace tragedies.
▪️We reflect on the ultimate goal: Get Home Safe.
🛡️ Protecting the Future
▪️Stand-Down for Safety: We take this time to review fall protection, equipment safety, and mental well-being.
▪️Psychosocial Safety: Recognizing that safety is about more than just hard hats—it’s about protecting the mind and heart.
▪️Union Strong: We leverage our collective voice to demand safer conditions and stronger enforcement of safety laws.

Please click the link below and take a moment to view the special safety messages presented this year by the IUEC General President and select signatory employers speaking on behalf of the collaborative efforts to cultivate, practice, and promote job-site safety and craftsmanship over speed, deadlines, and all else.

🦺Prioritizing What Matters Most: Modernization Safety Meeting

At Elevator Control Service, safety isn't just a policy, it’s a commitment to our people. Last month, we held our first quarterly safety meeting with the Modernization Team to align our goals for the year ahead.

Key Takeaways:
🎦 Innovation: We are officially rolling out Samsara software across our entire fleet to enhance driver protection and road safety.
💡 Mindset: We were reminded that the most important reason for safety is waiting for us at home. We empower our team to make the right choices every single day.
🤝 Leadership: Great to have our Director of Modernization, Jason Church, reintroduce Matt Baldwin as one of our new Modernization Supervisors.

Rewarding Excellence:
👏Congratulations to Gerry Masri, Al Reeder, and Jordan Williams for winning our safety raffle! Their dedication to staying up to date on toolbox talks earned them their choice of Milwaukee tool bags and radios.

👥Safety is a shared responsibility, and we’re proud of the team for stepping up.

Procedures For Uncoiling And Unreeling Wire Rope. Improper Handling Is The Leading Cause Of Permanent Damage, Specifically Kinking, Which Ruins The Rope's Structural Integrity.

Correct Methods (Top Row)✅

From a Reel: The reel should be mounted on a horizontal shaft (supported by jacks or a stand) so that it can rotate freely. As the person walks away with the rope end, the reel spins, allowing the rope to pay off straight without any twisting.

From a Coil: The coil should be stood on its edge and rolled along the ground like a hoop. One person holds the end while another rolls the coil away. This allows the rope to uncoil naturally with its original "lay."

Incorrect Methods (Bottom Row)❌

From a Reel on its Side: Laying a reel flat on its fl**ge and pulling the rope off overhead is dangerous. This "throws off" turns, which induces a twist for every loop removed. These twists quickly turn into sharp spirals and kinks.

From a Coil Lying Flat: Similarly, pulling rope straight up from a coil lying on the floor puts a full twist into the rope for every loop pulled. This makes the rope unmanageable and causes "dog-legs" or permanent kinks that cannot be straightened.

Why It Matters

When a loop in a wire rope is pulled tight, it creates a kink. This causes a permanent set in the wires that "unbalances" the strands. Even if you try to hammer it straight, the wires in that section are weakened and will eventually fail under load.

Over 4 Decades of Uplifting Others ⬆️
This month we celebrated another legend in the elevator trade. After an incredible 45-year career, Billy Bradshaw is hanging up his tool belt.
After following in his father’s footsteps, we’re proud to say the legacy continues with his twin boys and stepson all currently carrying out the family tradition in the trade. He’s been a true asset to Elcon’s Modernization Department—skilled, reliable, hardworking and a true team player. 🛠️💪
His impact doesn’t stop at the job site; he’s still a dedicated teacher at Local 10, passing his decades of wisdom to the next generation of mechanics.
When he’s not coaching his grandkids on the sidelines or cheering them on from the stands, you’ll find him on his boat crabbing and fishing. 🦀🎣 Billy, we hope the waters are calm and the fish are biting! We wish you and your wife nothing but the best on your upcoming travels.
Congratulations on a well-deserved retirement! You’ve left a lasting mark on our company and this industry. We thank you! 🥂

Celebrating a Career That Reached New Heights ⛰️

They say every great ride must eventually come to a stop, and last week, our Modernization and Installation Director, Henry Bowling, reached his final floor with us 🅱️ After years of making sure everyone else got to where they needed to go, it's finally time for him to enjoy the view from the top. We’re so grateful for the years of dedication, precision, and leadership Henry brought to every project. While we’ll miss him in the office, we’re excited for him to trade blueprints for extended camping trips without Monday and the work week interfering. Plenty of time to relax by a warm fire with a nice glass of bourbon. 🏕️🥃 Based on the gifts, you’ll have plenty to choose from 🎁😉

Happy Retirement, Henry! 🎉Thank you for always ⬆️🛗

Our team had a quick celebration today with a delicious King Cake courtesy of Crystal Wells — no Hurricanes or Hand Grenades though ☹🤣

We were all anxiously waiting to see who discovered the tiny baby Jesus inside! 👀👶That honor goes to Kaitlyn Taylor in our Modernization Department! Hoping good luck finds you, Kaitlyn.

4️⃣1️⃣Years of Elevating Excellence ⬆️🛠️✨

Last Friday we honored a true legend at Elevator Control Service: our very own Donnie Dephillip.
Donnie celebrated a staggering 41 years of dedicated service to not just this industry, but to the ELCON family. He has been our steady hand, known just as much for his impeccable class and professional demeanor as he is for his mechanical expertise. His legacy isn't just in the machinery he’s maintained, but in the people he has shaped. For almost four decades, Donnie has mentored dozens of apprentices—many of whom have followed in his footsteps to become master mechanics themselves.

And of course, we couldn’t mention Donnie without mentioning his favorite tradition: keeping the office fueled by bringing in Dunkin' Donuts every single Thursday. 🍩 Like clockwork. (His replacement is picking up the slack, so all is not lost 😉)

Donnie, thank you for 41 years of excellence, mentorship, loyalty, and for always making our Thursdays a little bit sweeter! We are honored to have you on the team and wish you all the best in your next endeavor. Don’t be a stranger. The door is always open!

We’d love to hear from you FB friends. Comment, share, like, and show your appreciation if you have a moment.
