Why do some types of acoustic panels have perforations?

Perforations can allow sound energy to pass through the visible surface and interact with an absorptive material behind it. The result is an acoustic assembly that can provide sound absorption while maintaining the appearance of a finished architectural surface.

Perforation patterns can also become part of the visual language of the design.

Columbia Heights City Hall brings city services and community spaces together in a modern 21,055-square-foot facility. Completed in 2023, the new City Hall includes a spacious lobby, City Council Chambers, and flexible meeting spaces designed to support accessibility, collaboration, and community engagement.

ASI Architectural contributed 1,914 square feet of custom-cut Fusion Flat ceiling panels finished in PS Walnut veneer with a clear lacquer coating, complemented by 472 linear feet of vertical trim. The panels were installed using ASI’s torsion spring system for a clean, accessible ceiling design.

The ceiling can be one of the most important surfaces for managing sound.

In many commercial interiors, the ceiling offers a large, continuous area where acoustic treatment can be integrated without taking away valuable wall space.

Perforated panels, linear systems, clouds, and other architectural ceiling treatments can help manage reflected sound while becoming an intentional part of the design.

Acoustic performance depends on more than good design—it also depends on proper ex*****on. During construction, small coordination or installation issues can impact how an acoustic system performs, even when the plans are correct.

By recognizing common acoustic risk points early, superintendents and project teams can help maintain design intent, minimize costly rework, and deliver spaces that perform as expected.

The University of Minnesota’s Athletes Village was designed to support excellence both on and off the field. Bringing together training, performance, nutrition, and academic spaces, the state-of-the-art facility creates an environment where student-athletes can thrive.

ASI Architectural supplied custom acoustic ceiling solutions throughout the project, including nearly 6,300 square feet of Audition 8 T&G ceiling planks in the main lobby and 2,400 square feet of Fusion panels in the locker and meeting rooms. Each system was engineered with custom perforation patterns to enhance acoustic performance while complementing the architect’s vision and celebrating the University’s identity.

Open ceilings don't have to mean compromised acoustics. Acoustically backed wood ceiling clouds provide a strategic way to control reverberation, define spaces, and enhance occupant comfort while preserving the open, exposed aesthetic that defines many modern commercial interiors.

When thoughtfully integrated into a design, ceiling clouds become more than a visual feature—they're an essential part of creating spaces that look exceptional and sound even better.

The best acoustic designs consider how a space will be used—not just how it will look. In multi-use environments, a single room may support presentations, collaboration, dining, and events throughout the day. Meeting those changing demands requires a coordinated approach that goes beyond a single material or product.

By combining ceiling treatments, wall systems, and laying out a building with acoustic zoning in mind, designers can create flexible spaces that deliver lasting comfort, speech clarity, and performance.
