Spreader beams and lifting beams are two of the most popular below-the-hook devices used to support and stabilize long, wide, and heavy loads. But while they appear similar, they apply and direct force differently, making each better suited to certain types of applications.

• Spreader beams are long bars with slings attached to either end that distribute weight evenly over the entire beam.
• Lifting beams are sturdy bars that connect to the hook at a single point at the top of the bar, with a set of lugs underneath that hold the load.

Both spreader beams and lifting beams prevent loads from being damaged or deformed under their own weight. Their design directs the force of the load differently during lifting. Spreader beams turn the weight into a compressive force, while lifting beams turn it into a bending force.

This difference is why spreader beams and lifting beams are not always interchangeable, even if they have the same rated capacity. Spreader beams are best for long, wide, or flexible loads while lifting beams are better at handling heavy, rigid, or multi-point loads.

Not sure whether a lifting beam or spreader beam is the right choice for your operation? Contact Simmers to discuss your setup and equipment! www.simmerscrane.com

Reliable lifting operations require more than well-built equipment. They require comprehensive end-to-end support from engineering, service, and a supply team capable of covering your crane from the first lift to the last. Not sure how to find the right partner? Look for a company that:

• Complies with OSHA and ASME B30 standards
• Understands duty-cycle classifications
• Services equipment from multiple brands
• Has access to a large inventory of OEM & aftermarket parts
• Does not subcontract crane inspections to third parties
• Documents issues and tracks deficiency trends

Simmers’ proactive maintenance strategy can provide a detailed snapshot of your crane and lifting equipment. Training, knowledge, and practical experience allows us to monitor, record, and respond to problems proactively, over the course of your crane’s service life, with high-quality parts from all major crane and hoist brands with the latest technology.

This comprehensive, take-charge approach helps us anticipate problems instead of reacting to them, for maximum uptime, stronger output, and enhanced safety. Contact us today, and let’s keep your operation moving forward. www.simmerscrane.com

The right hoist isn't the one that can handle the most weight; it's the one that fits your environment, duty-cycle, and application. Ask yourself:

• How much weight does it need to lift?
• How many lifts will it need to perform every hour?
• How many hours a day will it run?
• What conditions will it face on the job?
• What is the maximum lift height?
• How much headroom is there in your facility?
• How precise does it need to be?

If you’re uncertain how to answer these questions, contact Simmers. We’ll work with you to understand your operation and lifting requirements, ensuring you select a hoist that delivers consistent, reliable performance for years to come. www.simmerscrane.com

Wire rope is one of the core components of your lifting system and its safe usage. To avoid accidents, every operator should be aware of the following signs, which may indicate your rope is nearing the end of its lifespan.

• Small, needle-like breaks along the wire’s surface
• Noticeable reduction in the rope’s diameter
• Rusty or dark spots on the rope surface

Professional inspections can help you determine whether your rope is strong enough to function or needs to be replaced. Contact Simmers to schedule your service appointment and ensure your hoists can operate safely. www.simmerscrane.com
