Hard stops and abrupt movements are characteristic of single speed and dual speed cranes. Reliance on these systems often leads to premature wear on critical components, including:

• Brakes
• Drivetrain
• Trolley
• End Trucks
• Wheels
• Runway Beams
• Wire Rope or Chain

VFDs regulate electric current, allowing operators to control acceleration and deceleration in practically every one of your crane’s motorized components, including the hoist, bridge, and trolley. Fine-tuning speed and stop times reduces strain on your equipment, extending its service life while improving reliability and lowering maintenance costs.

For businesses that rely on overhead cranes to transport, position, and store materials, understanding how to avoid unexpected failures should be top priority. Nothing disrupts operations faster than faulty equipment or a sudden breakdown. To keep your cranes running smoothly:

• Monitor performance daily
• Ask operators to check equipment before activating it
• Implement a preventative maintenance program
• Follow OSHA guidelines for periodic inspections
• Address small problems before they escalate
• Maintain accurate service records

Monitoring your crane helps you identify and address issues before they lead to costly, unscheduled downtime—while providing the data you need to make informed decisions about service, upgrades, and modernization.

Pushing overhead cranes might help you meet production targets, but can wind up costing you more in the long run. Small issues can escalate quickly, leading to costly repairs and serious accidents. To ensure the integrity of your equipment and the safety of your team, always call a professional when you encounter the following problems.

• Hoist drifts down or fails to hold a load
• Kinked or frayed wire ropes
• Stretched or corroded chain links
• Tripped breakers or intermittent power
• Unresponsive controls
• Overheating
• Loss of lifting power
• Burning smells or griding noises
• Cracked or twisted hooks
• Missing safety latches
• Widened hook throat opening
• Slipping, jerky, or erratic lifting
• Loose mountings
• Structural damage to hoist frame

Regular inspections can help catch these issues early, when they can be repaired without significant downtime. Contact Reading today to make sure your cranes have the support they need to function reliably.

Electric hoists are powerful tools designed to speed production, reduce cycle times, and minimize material bottlenecks. But they can’t perform their tasks safely or effectively unless operators know how to identify damage, wear, and loose parts. Before activating the hoist, check for:

• Frayed, kinked, crushed, or corroded cables and wires
• Loose or missing bolts and fasteners
• Cracked, stretched, or twisted chains and hooks
• Sheave grooves that are too deep or narrow

Operators should also test the hoist's safety devices, including overload protection, emergency stops, and limit switches, to make sure they’re fully functional. Record the hoist’s condition in a logbook, so you can track its health over time.

Daily inspections are a good way to catch problems but need to be conducted alongside professional inspections performed by an experienced, qualified technician. These types of periodic check-ups provide an in-depth look at your hoist, ensuring compliance with safety regulations and following up on issues noted in your daily log.

Concerned your hoist might be overdue for an inspection? Contact Reading today to schedule a visit with our service team! www.readingcrane.com

OSHA divides crane inspections into two distinct categories: frequent and periodic. Frequent inspections are conducted by operators or trained maintenance personnel who understand how the equipment works and when it needs to be pulled from service.

Periodic inspections must be thoroughly documented, with a complete record of the technician’s findings and a list of all corrective actions taken or recommended. These documents not only show due diligence; they also help predict when components are nearing the end of their service life.

Contact our service team today at www.readingcrane.com to schedule an appointment and make sure your cranes can lift loads safely, smoothly, and securely.

While rated capacity determines how much weight your crane can lift, duty cycles play an even bigger role in determining your crane’s lifespan, maintenance requirements, and total cost of ownership. A crane that lifts 10 tons once a day requires a different design than one that lifts 10 tons every hour. Heavy duty cycles:

• Accelerate wear on moving components, particularly hoists, brakes, and motors.
• Place additional stress on bridges, end trucks, trolley frames, and other structural components.
• Lead to higher maintenance and electricity costs.

Robust design, reinforced components, and intelligent control features help engineers overcome these challenges – allowing cranes to withstand repeated loading over a long service life in even the most demanding environment.

Strong cranes require strong engineering, backed by high-level maintenance and inspection capabilities. Reading has been building durable lifting systems for over a century, delivering state-of-the-art cranes designed to minimize wear, resist fatigue, and simplify maintenance.
