What are we testing in the lab today? – PLASTIC REGRIND FLAKE

Some of us recycle to save the earth. Some of us recycle out of guilt. Some of us recycle out of peer pressure. No matter the reason, we can all agree that there are many benefits to recycling.

Recyclers can take many forms of plastic for reprocessing. The plastic bottle is one of the most commonly recycled items.

The first and most important step to reprocessing these bottles is an individual putting a bottle into a recycling bin … The recyclers will take it from there.

The plastic bottles are put into a grinder to produce the plastic flakes. Those flakes are then washed to remove any contaminants before being further processed. These flakes can be used in moldings, composites, coatings, clothing, bags, more bottles, and many other products.

After the initial grind, the recyclers need to be certain that the flakes are the correct size before sending them to the end processors. This is where SWECO Separators can help.

This video shows a SWECO Low Profile Separator screening plastic flakes with the intention of capturing any product larger than one square inch.

What are we testing in the lab today? – ALUMINUM OXIDE POWDER

Aluminum oxide is a chemical compound of aluminum and oxygen. It is a white, odorless, crystalline powder with a sand-like consistency.

It is used in polishing and abrasive applications and in the production of ceramics and metals. The majority of aluminum oxide is used in the production of aluminum.

Because of its inert quality, aluminum oxide is often used as a filler in plastics, as well as sunscreen and various make-up products.

There is one characteristic of aluminum oxide powder that makes the screening of it problematic. The powder tends to agglomerate making it difficult to screen at high capacities.

The customer wanted to increase their capacity of a competitor’s system by more than 3,000%. As can be seen on the video, using a Low Profile Separator, the agglomerates will not go through the screen immediately. This negatively effects the throughput of the machine. Even though our process increased the current capacity by over 800%, it wasn’t enough for what the customer requested.

However, there’s more than one way to screen a powder. We switched gears and began testing with a SWECO CS6 Centrifugal Sifter. This screening process was able to increase the customer’s capacity by nearly 4,500%.

SWECO has a wide range of separation equipment. So, if one technology doesn’t produce the desired results, we just keep on trying.

What are we testing in the lab today? – EGG WHITE POWDER

Egg white powder is made up of egg whites that are pasteurized to eliminate any pathogens and extend shelf life. The whites are then spray dried where the water evaporates to produce a powder. This powder is then ground.

Egg white powder can be used as a fresh egg substitute in many foodstuffs. It can also be used as a dietary protein supplement to aid in muscle building, weight loss, or as a source of amino acids.

The objective of the SWECO Lab was to effectively separate the egg white powder through a customer specified mesh size screen and compare it to the customer’s existing process.

Tests were performed on a SWECO Round Separator and a SWECO Centrifugal Sifter to see which machine provided the best efficiency and feed rate for the customer.

In this video, you can see the egg white powder being screened on a round separator.

SWECO SPECIALTY DISCHARGE SPOUTS
Discharge Spouts are a simple, yet critical component of each frame. But sometimes there is a necessity to modify the simple into something a little more complex.

For example, if material can go through a screen at a rate of “X” number of pounds per hour, that doesn’t necessarily mean that the discharge spout can handle that same flow.

Additionally, customers often require the separators’ spouts to fit precisely into their existing processes. Or a standard spout has corners where material can get trapped. This occurrence is unacceptable for many applications.

For these reasons and more, SWECO is often asked to provide modified spouts on their frames...spouts that can handle added material discharge, fit into existing processes, is acceptable for sanitary applications, and more.

SWECO manufactures as many customized spouts as we do standard spouts. This video shows just a few of the more common modifications.

What are we testing in the lab today? – SOYBEAN OIL

Soybean oil is a very versatile oil and is one of the most consumed cooking oils globally.

As for its uses in the culinary world, it is a simple substitute in most recipes for vegetable oils due to its neutral taste. It can be employed in baked goods, as a salad dressing, used in deep frying, and in many other conditions. Additionally, soybean oil can be used as a natural moisturizer for your skin or hair.

Soybean oil is produced by squeezing the oil out from seeds and kernels of the soybean. The oil is then separated from the solids and refined to eliminate any contaminants.

The separation stage can be accomplished through various equipment such as decanter centrifuges or vibratory separators.

SWECO was requested by the customer to determine feasibility, efficiency and capacity for the separation using a SWECO Round Separator. The test exceeded the customer’s requirements.

TEST LAB TUESDAY
What are we testing in the lab today? – DRY CITRUS FIBER

The most common sources of citrus fiber are lemon, lime, and oranges. It is made from the peel and pulp of the citrus fruits. After the peels and pulp are dried, it is ground into a powder. It is most commonly used in baked good specifically for moisture retention.

This video provides a good demonstration of the difficulties of fine mesh screening. While nearly all the material is small enough to go through the screen, because of the small mesh openings and the nature of the fibrous material, the product tends to remain on top of the screen and exit out with the oversize material.

To combat this, our lab technicians used SWECO Sono-Wave Ultrasonic technology to help the material through the screen. Additionally, a higher lead angle was set to keep the material in the center of the screen. This allowed the added weight of the material to push the fibers through.
