Great customer support goes beyond delivering equipment. It means helping clients build the knowledge, skills, and capabilities to get the most out of their investment.

Recently, Geocomp’s João Machado, Geotechnical Engineer, traveled across Brazil to support university research teams and strengthen industry collaborations.

During visits to the Universidade Federal de Ouro Preto (UFOP) and the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), João helped expand laboratory testing capabilities, install new equipment, and provide hands-on training in advanced geotechnical testing methods. At UFOP, training reached 11 faculty members, researchers, and students, while work at UFRJ supported ongoing offshore geotechnical research.

The trip also included a visit with Pimenta d’Ávila, a leading geotechnical engineering firm, to exchange technical insights and advance industry collaboration.

From equipment installation to practical training and research partnerships, Geocomp and GeoTesting Express are committed to helping clients strengthen their capabilities and advance geotechnical engineering.

When bridge approaches begin showing signs of premature distress, understanding the underlying causes is critical to developing effective, long-term solutions.

Geocomp was selected by a U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) to lead Phase One of a forensic investigation into distress across numerous bridges in the western U.S. Our team is bringing together geotechnical forensic expertise, structural analysis, and field instrumentation to evaluate deficiencies across multiple bridge approach designs.

From potential voids behind mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls to pavement deterioration and structural connection performance, this multidisciplinary approach will help establish a path toward targeted repairs and long-term mitigation.

By investigating the root causes—not just the visible symptoms—Geocomp helps infrastructure owners make informed decisions about repair strategies and long-term asset performance.

What's really happening beneath the surface?

Voids, weak layers, changing moisture conditions, unexpected rock conditions, and ground movement can affect design, construction, mining operations, and long-term asset performance. The challenge is getting enough information to understand what’s happening below the surface before those conditions affect the project.

S-scan combines expert design, passive and active seismic technologies, and skilled processing to help engineering and project teams characterize and monitor subsurface conditions over time.

Applications include:
- Detecting voids, cavities, and sinkhole conditions
- Finding water bodies and purged acquifers
- Identifying weak or moisture-affected zones
- Evaluating rock depth and characteristics
- Detection of harden zones, submerged large boulders, or geological anomalies
- Supporting grade control and mine planning
- Monitoring changes in ground stability over time

S-scan can be used for a one-time investigation or continuous monitoring and can complement conventional investigation methods by helping teams build a more complete picture of subsurface conditions ahead of or during mining operations.

The goal isn’t simply more data. It’s reducing uncertainty so teams can make better-informed decisions about project risk, design, construction, and operations.
