THREE OTHER SHOPS COULDN’T FIX.

Customer comes in and tells us:

“I’ve had this truck to three different shops and nobody can fix it. If you can’t fix it, we’re getting rid of it.”

The problem: Every time the truck is put into 4WD, the A/C will stop blowing out of the dash vents. Sometimes it would take hours—or even until the next day—before it started blowing out of the vents correctly again.

Now, this customer knows we don’t normally work on diesels. But this wasn’t a diesel problem.

So… time for us to put on the cape. We had to figure out what everyone else had missed. 🦸‍♂️🔧

We verified the problem and then started where every diagnosis should start: a good visual inspection.

We have a good understanding of how this A/C system works with our years in the business. It’s a vacuum operated system being a ford f250.

Right away, we found a vacuum hose disconnected at one of the 4WD locking hubs. (Circled in picture 1) We had vacuum at the line, so we knew the vacuum pump was working—although it had been working overtime trying to compensate for the leak.

Someone had previously installed an oversized vacuum hose, which is why it had come off. We replaced it with the correct-size hose, hooked everything back up, and went for a test drive.

Same problem.

Here’s something we’ve learned over the years:

👉 When a vehicle has been through multiple shops, a man-made problem can be one of the hardest problems to diagnose.

So we kept digging.

Next, we used vise-grips to temporarily pinch off the vacuum lines going to each wheel area and took another test drive. This is to tell us if the problem is in the locking 4wd hub area or somewhere else. It’s a process of elimination. You have to start somewhere. It’s always best to find the easiest spot to start eliminating and work from there.

Bingo. 🎯

The problem completely disappeared. The A/C stayed blowing through the dash vents exactly like it should, even while operating the 4WD.

Now we knew exactly which direction to go.

Time to tear into the front differential and find out WHY the 4WD system was losing vacuum.

Once we got inside, it was obvious someone had been in there fairly recently.

We found the 4WD locking hub O-rings in terrible condition (picture 2), along with the seals on the backside of the hubs being completely shot (picture 3). If you look at the circled area in the picture, you can see just how bad the seal is.

And both sides looked almost identical.

But we’re not interested in fixing something halfway.

To repair this correctly, the front differential carrier also needs to come out so the inner axle seals can be replaced. Skip that step, and there’s a good chance the truck comes right back later with axle fluid leaking.

Three shops couldn’t figure it out.

The truck was almost ready to be gotten rid of.

This isn’t a cheap fix but it’s a lot cheaper than a new truck.

🔧 That’s what diagnostics is all about.

Customer calls me with a part number for a hydraulic fitting and asks, “Do you have these, or can you get them soon? Nobody else has them.”

I’m not gonna lie, that “nobody else has it” or “nobody else can fix it” line always burns a little. 😂 Like dang, why am I the last resort?

And probably not the best line to use when your vehicle is broke, because if I’ve gotta do what nobody else can do, that might automatically add a little to the diagnostic bill. 😂

Anyway, I tell him, “Yep, I can get them. They’re $75 each.”

He says, “They’re $75?”

“Yep.”

“Get me 6 of them.”

Turns out they were $115–$130 EACH everywhere else he checked and not in stock.

He bought 6 from us at $75 each, saving him $240–$330.

Here’s the part I think is worth sharing: we made $15 a piece on them. That’s $90 profit on a deal that took us just a few minutes to handle. We made money, the customer saved a bunch of money, and everybody walked away happy. Check the internet it was a dang good price.

Hydraulic hoses and fittings are just one of several things we do to help our customers and show our appreciation for their business. You’ll have a hard time beating our prices on a lot of these things—not because we’re trying to beat everybody else or undercut anyone , but because we’re trying to give people an honest, fair deal.

Make a fair profit, take care of the customer, and give them a reason to come back.

Sometimes the “last resort” ends up being the best call. 😂

Let’s talk about grease. When you come in to get an oil change or tie rod or something replaced this is the grease we use. We don’t believe in using the cheapest grease we can find. We have used this same grease for many years. We don’t bill for grease when we do a repair. But we do sale a lot of grease to farmers.

A lot of people are asking more questions about the batteries we have for sale. They are great for farmers, boating, some vehicles, game cameras and other things.

What are they?
The ones with the blue logo are a 27 series battery. This is a larger marine style battery that measures 12x7x 9. They test little over 800 cold cranking amps.
The ones with purple logo are a 24 series battery. This is a normal size marine battery that measures 10.25x6.8x8.8. They also test a little over 800 cold cranking amps.

Pulled out a 25 year old vintage ac system on a 67 Malibu to upgrade it to a modern Gen 5 unit and cleaned up some wires and things under the hood. Looks a lot better now.

Had a great conversation with the team at Universal Hose & Fittings about our hydraulic hose crimper setup and ideas for crimping RedHorse fittings.

These guys are some of the most knowledgeable in the business, so hearing their feedback meant a lot. Mark even asked to see a video of our set up- and after watching it, he said its the craziest most unique crimper contraption he has seen in his 37 years of building hoses.

We'll take that as a compliment. lol
