When people think of structural steel fabrication, they usually think about welders, cranes, beams, and sparks flying.

What they don't think about is the equipment that keeps everything moving.

Enter the Combilift.

Before we had one, moving long, heavy steel through tight spaces could sometimes feel like trying to parallel park a semi trailer in a drive-thru. 😄

Today, it's one of the most valuable pieces of equipment in our yard.

Long beams? No problem.

Heavy columns? Bring them on.

Tight aisles? That's where it shines.

It's made loading, unloading, storing, and moving steel safer and more efficient while helping us maximize our available space.

Sometimes the most important piece of equipment in the shop isn't the one making sparks—it's the one making everything else possible.

Most people just see a finished building.

What they don't see is the incredible amount of planning, coordination, and detail that happens long before the first piece of steel is ever erected.

A structural steel project often begins with architectural and engineering plans. From there, estimators review the drawings, perform quantity takeoffs, and develop budgets and proposals.

Once a project is awarded, the real work begins.

Detailers create thousands of individual shop drawings and 3D models showing every beam, column, connection, bolt, weld, and piece of steel. Those drawings are then reviewed, checked, and submitted for approval by engineers, architects, and the project team.

After approval, each drawing is checked again and released to the shop for fabrication.

Then the steel starts moving.

Material is ordered, received, cut, drilled, coped, fitted, welded, inspected, and prepared for shipment. Every piece is marked and tracked so it arrives at the job site in the correct sequence.

Finally, after months of planning and fabrication, the steel is delivered to the field where ironworkers and er****on crews assemble what began as lines on a set of plans.

The next time you see a building, bridge, staircase, canopy, or structural steel frame, remember that countless hours of engineering, detailing, checking, fabrication, logistics, and craftsmanship went into making it a reality.

Steel fabrication isn't just building structures.

It's turning an idea on paper into something that will stand for generations.

When I first started in the structural steel industry, I kept hearing people talk about a "porte-cochère."

Being new to the business, I had absolutely no idea what they were talking about.

In my head, I was convinced everyone was saying "portable chair."

I remember thinking, "Why are we building so many portable chairs? And why is everyone acting like it's such a big deal?" 😂

After hearing the term enough times, I finally gave in and looked it up.

Boy, did I feel silly.

For those who may not know, a porte-cochère is a covered structure at the entrance of a building that allows vehicles to pull up underneath to drop off or pick up passengers while staying protected from the weather. You'll often see them at hospitals, hotels, schools, assisted living facilities, and large commercial buildings.

The funny thing is, once I learned what a porte-cochère was, I started noticing them everywhere.

Now I'm curious...

Did you know what a porte-cochère was before reading this?

And how many times do you think you've used one without ever knowing its name?

Sometimes the construction industry has a language all its own, and every now and then we're reminded that we all had to learn it somewhere.

What's a term from your profession that made absolutely no sense the first time you heard it?

I think working in steel fabrication has permanently changed the way I look at buildings.

Others walk into a building and see the décor.

I walk in and immediately start looking at the beams, columns, connections, trusses, staircases, and wondering how they got everything erected. 😂

I can't be the only one who does this...

What's the most impressive structure you've ever seen in person?

A bridge, stadium, skyscraper, church, historic building, monument, or anything else that made you stop and say, "Wow."

Where was it, and what made it so memorable?

I'd love to hear your answers and maybe add a few new places to my bucket list.

A Behind-the-Scenes Look at This Custom Rolled Staircase

A few weeks ago, we shared photos of this impressive rolled staircase being installed on-site. Today, we wanted to show a little of what went into making it happen.

Projects like this don't come off the shelf. Every piece was carefully fabricated, fitted, and checked in our shop before it ever left the building. To ensure a precise fit, our team built a custom jig that replicated the exact elevations and connection points at the job site. This allowed us to assemble and fine-tune the staircase in a controlled environment before delivery.
From rolling the stringers and fitting the treads to final assembly and quality checks, this project showcased the skill, experience, and attention to detail of our fabrication team.

The end result is a beautiful, one-of-a-kind staircase, but what many don't see is the planning, engineering, craftsmanship, and teamwork that happen behind the scenes to bring a project like this to life.

We're proud of the work our crew puts into every project, and this staircase is a great example of what's possible when talented people take pride in their craft.
Built in our shop. Fitted before delivery. Installed with confidence.

There’s something special about being able to work on a piece of Minnesota history.

Our company recently had the opportunity to assist with stabilization efforts at the historic Wasioja Ruins in southeastern Minnesota. Our work included structural bracing and walkway improvements designed to help preserve the site while making it safer and more accessible for visitors to experience and enjoy.

The Wasioja Seminary Ruins are a reminder of Minnesota’s early history and the communities that helped shape our state. Originally built in the 1850s, the seminary was once considered a promising educational center before tragedy and changing times led to its decline. Today, the stone ruins stand as a lasting symbol of the past and continue to attract visitors from across the region.

It was truly an honor to be a part of helping preserve this historic landmark for future generations. Projects like this are more than just construction — they are about protecting stories, history, and places that matter.

We are proud to have played a role in helping ensure the Wasioja Ruins can continue to be visited and appreciated for years to come.

At Bergh’s Fabricating, we don’t just focus on Structural Steel — we also have a full-service Misc Metals shop capable of bringing custom projects like this to life.

Check out this beautiful custom staircase and railing system our crew recently completed for a new home build. The combination of the clean steel work, floating wood treads, and modern railing design turned this into a true centerpiece of the home.

Projects like this take a lot of planning, precision, and craftsmanship from start to finish, and our guys in the shop continue to prove time and time again that they can deliver high-quality work no matter the challenge. From fabrication to fit and finish, the attention to detail on this one really shows.

We’re proud of the team behind projects like these and the work they put in every day. Whether it’s large structural steel packages or custom architectural and misc metals work, our crew takes pride in building it right.

Great job by everyone involved on another outstanding project!

At Bergh’s Fabricating Inc., we take pride in tackling projects that push the limits of craftsmanship—and this one did exactly that.

This rolled steel stair pushed our shop to the limit. Precision Rolling, Tight tolerances, complex curves, and a whole lot of problem-solving—but that’s what we do.

The crew put in the work, stuck with it, and in the end… absolutely crushed it.

Proud of the guys for bringing this one across the finish line. 💪
