Welding Tip: Fabricating a 2x2 Post with Mounting Ears 🔩🔥

Here’s a simple but super useful piece of hardware — a 2”x2” steel post with welded “ears” or tabs. I use these all the time for brackets, hinges, or structural tie-ins.⁠
⁠
Here’s the breakdown:
2”x2” x .120” wall square tube⁠
1/4” thick steel tabs (aka “ears”) — with 1/2” holes⁠
Tabs are spaced evenly, tacked square, then welded solid⁠
Always clean the mill scale for better weld quality⁠
⁠
Pro Tip: Drill your holes before welding the tabs on. It’s way easier to get clean, accurate holes when the plate’s flat on the table.⁠
