Most homeowners pick replacement windows by style and price. The two numbers that actually tell you a lot about a window's energy performance are almost never explained at the point of sale.

Here's what they mean.

U-Factor measures how quickly heat transfers through the window. Lower is better. A window rated 0.25 insulates better than one rated 0.45 β€” and that difference can affect your home's energy performance.

SHGC (Solar Heat Gain Coefficient) measures how much solar heat passes through the window. In Missouri winters, the right SHGC can help take advantage of useful solar heat, depending on the window's orientation and your home's design.

Andersen windows list both ratings on their products. Therma-Tru doors are also evaluated using U-Factor and SHGC ratings, and more than 85% of Therma-Tru door and glass options qualify for ENERGY STAR.

Fall is the right time to upgrade. Our team can walk you through the actual ratings before you buy.

When you last replaced a window, did anyone explain U-Factor to you?

Cold hands, gloved fingers, and a battery that suddenly loses runtime in low temperatures β€” that's the real fall job-site test.

Since 1938, we've watched what actually works when temperatures drop. And one thing that's changed dramatically: cordless tools have become the go-to choice for many exterior and framing applications.

No cord management on a ladder. No extension cord running across the job site. Just grab the tool and get to work.

But cold temperatures can noticeably reduce lithium-ion battery runtime and power. That's one reason we favor brushless platforms β€” they're generally more efficient and can deliver better performance and runtime from the same battery.

The key is choosing the right tool and battery platform for the work you're actually doing.

What tool category surprised you most by going cordless?

We'd love to hear what's earned a permanent spot in your bag.

Lumber prices may look steady right now.

But steady doesn't necessarily mean predictable.

Tariffs, supply constraints, domestic mill production, housing demand and inventory levels are all variables that can move the market as we head toward fall construction season.

That flat line isn't necessarily relief. It may be a window.

If you're planning a fall build, this is a good time to talk through what materials you'll need, what makes sense to stock, and when you may want to order.

Hall Brothers tracks the building-material market so you don't have to navigate every price movement on your own.

Are you locking in materials now β€” or waiting to see what September brings?

Your roofer chose the underlayment.

Do you know what they picked β€” and whether it matches your shingle manufacturer's installation requirements?

Here's the part most homeowners never hear about: the material underneath your shingles matters.

Traditional asphalt felt has been used for decades, but modern synthetic underlayments can offer advantages including lighter weight, better resistance to wrinkling and strong water resistance. The right choice depends on the roofing system, manufacturer requirements and local conditions.

And here's the part worth checking before the shingles go on:

If your shingle manufacturer's installation instructions require a specific underlayment, installing a different product could affect warranty coverage.

Hall Brothers has been supplying building materials since 1938, and we carry both synthetic and felt underlayments along with the roofing materials you need to build the right system.

We'll help you get the materials specified correctly β€” with free delivery available.

Has a client ever asked you about underlayment before you started? Would you expect them to?

After 87 years of roofing projects, we'll say it plainly: felt underlayment is a price compromise, not a performance choice.

Synthetic underlayment β€” polyethylene or polypropylene β€” tears harder, sheds moisture better, and holds up under UV exposure in ways felt simply cannot match. That's not opinion. That's what we've watched play out on roofs across this region for decades.

The professional standard in 2026 pairs peel-and-stick at your eaves, valleys, and penetrations with synthetic across the main deck. That combination is your real weather barrier.

Felt has one advantage: upfront cost. If that's your only reason, own it. But don't call it equal.

What's currently under your shingles β€” felt or synthetic?

School starts in weeks. If you're converting that basement into a homework room or home office, you needed to start yesterday.

Here's what most DIYers get wrong: they insulate the walls and completely forget the rim joist β€” that band of framing where your floor meets the foundation. It's the single biggest thermal leak in most basements.

The second mistake? Skipping v***r management. In Missouri's climate, putting fiberglass batts directly against a concrete wall traps moisture. Mold follows.

Mineral wool against the concrete, then fiberglass in the stud bays. That's the correct sequence.

Our staff knows Union's local climate and can walk you through exactly what your space needs. Are you planning a basement or bonus room finish this fall?

Cutting every stud and header on-site isn't skilled β€” it's expensive.

A full day of labor gone. Scrap piling up in the corner. One mis-cut header that sets the whole crew back two hours. That's the reality of winging it on a basement or bonus room build.

The sharpest contractors starting jobs this month in Franklin County already know: pre-labeled, room-by-room job packs are how professionals run a tight schedule.

We build them around your plans at Hall Brothers in Union. Send us your blueprints and we'll pre-cut materials to spec, sorted by phase or room, labeled and bundled before they hit your job site. Materials arrive ready to go β€” not ready to be figured out.

Are you still cutting on-site and calling it efficiency?

If your AC runs constantly and the house still feels hot by 3pm, stop blaming the unit.

Your windows and entry door are likely the problem.

Franklin County summers hit hard β€” and a standard wood door gives up on you before August does. A Therma-Tru fiberglass door with a polyurethane foam core insulates up to four times better than wood, according to Therma-Tru's own performance data. The gap you feel at the door frame on a 95-degree day in Union isn't a breeze. That's your electric bill leaving the building.

Andersen windows with Low-E glass block heat before it enters the room β€” reflecting radiant heat back before it becomes the reason your upstairs never cools down. Energy Star certified means the product has been independently tested to cut energy waste, not just stamped with a marketing claim. Most Therma-Tru fiberglass door systems carry that certification across all four U.S. climate zones.

We carry both at Hall Brothers in Union. If your home is harder to cool than it used to be, that's where the conversation starts.

Most homeowners overspend on cabinets and underspend on trim. And it shows in every single photo.

Cabinets get replaced. Trim defines the bones of a house forever. The casing around a doorway, the profile on a staircase, the crown where the wall meets the ceiling β€” that's what separates a premium remodel from a builder-grade box.

In the Union Historic District and across Franklin County, we see it on every restoration project that comes through the yard. The homes that photograph well, the ones that feel considered rather than assembled, almost always made that call early β€” quality trim and custom millwork before the finishes went on.

Custom millwork isn't a luxury add-on. It's the decision that makes everything else look intentional.

We carry mouldings, splayed trim, custom-sized casings, and stair parts at Hall Brothers in Union β€” and through Do-It-Best we can source specialty profiles that aren't on the shelf, typically in one to two weeks. We've been helping contractors and homeowners get this right since 1938.

What detail in your home do you wish someone had told you to spend more on?

Framing lumber prices are up 2.8% over the last month, according to NAHB's July 20 report on Madison's Lumber Price Index. And August could push them in either direction.

Here's the situation: the Commerce Department's preliminary antidumping determination on Canadian softwood lumber came in lower than the current rate β€” but the final determination lands in August. Until it does, Canadian lumber still carries a combined tariff rate of 35.9% β€” the existing AD/CVD rate plus the 10% Section 232 tariff that stays regardless of what the final determination says.

What that means practically: the preliminary rate is not the final rate. It can move up or down. Contractors pricing framing packages right now are working with a number that has a known revision date attached to it.

Locking in materials before that determination finalizes isn't speculation. It's reading the calendar.

87 years of supplier relationships means we can help you read the timing β€” not just sell you the lumber. If you're pricing a framing job right now, it's worth a conversation before August gets here.
