At the Radical Reuse Center, youth learn while they earn.

Education remains central to our work. This year, we’ve continued partnering with local institutions to offer paid internships that give youth hands-on experience in building, organization, and fabrication using reclaimed materials.

Interns helped build out our shop at the Radical Reuse Center and are now creating small-scale items from salvaged inventory — gaining real-world skills while contributing to a more circular building culture.

The Radical Reuse Center has come a long way in just one year.

From vacant retail space to reuse hub, we’re continuing to transform part of a former Agway in Union into a functional workshop, materials store, and community resource — built exclusively with reclaimed materials from local deconstruction projects.

This space reflects our values in action: the strength of reuse, adaptability, and steady progress made by many hands.

Looking back, we’re proud of how far this space has come — and excited for what’s next.

What if new projects started with old materials?

As we head into the new year, Second Story Builders is deepening our focus on a design+build process we’re calling “secondhand-first” — projects that prioritize reclaimed materials from the very beginning. Our work challenges conventional construction by designing with what already exists, reducing waste while celebrating the character, history, and beauty of reuse.

The photos here highlight just a few examples of what’s possible when reclaimed materials lead the process.

This is why we deconstruct instead of demolish.

Second Story Builders closed out our 2025 season by carefully taking apart a traditional Maine waterfront cottage built in the 1930s in Camden — a structure comprising cedar shingles, pine sheathing planks, solid wood T&G beadboard, ¾” cherry T&G flooring, and so much more.

Deconstruction keeps these materials in circulation rather than sending them to the landfill — but reintegrating them into new builds is the critical part, and that’s where you come in.

Sometimes, deconstruction projects result in our acquiring great things that have nothing to do with building materials.

Friends -

ASAP We are looking for space to temporarily (a few months) store pieces of a house that we are deconstructing. Here's what we need:

Roughly 10x20ft of space, outdoors or indoors. The space needs to be accessible by a truck with a 20ft flatbed trailer (think: parking lot, driveway, gravel pad, dirt, but not soft squishy ground).

Ideally, we also need access to equipment - a forklift or a skid steer with forks -- to unload the trailer. We have knowhow and manpower.

We are glad to pay in money or materials! PM if you've got a solution for us.

Ideal locations are Rockland to Lincolnville, including Union/Hope/Appleton/Searsmont etc.
